Velocity is a crucial concept in physics, and it is measured as the change in an object’s position over time. One of the most common units used to express this speed is feet per second (ft/s). In this article, we’ll explore how to calculate feet per second with some easy-to-follow examples.

Step 1: Understand the basic formula

The formula for velocity (V) in feet per second is:

V = d / t

Where:

– V is the velocity in feet per second (ft/s)

– d is the distance traveled in feet (ft)

– t is the time taken to cover that distance in seconds (s)

Step 2: Convert units if necessary

When calculating feet per second, make sure all measurements are in the same units. If your distance or time is in a different unit, convert them to feet and seconds first.

For example:

1 mile = 5280 feet

1 hour = 3600 seconds

Step 3: Plug in the values and solve

Now that you have all your measurements, simply plug them into the equation V = d / t and solve for V.

Example 1:

A person walks 500 feet in 200 seconds. What is their speed in feet per second?

Solution:

V = d / t

V = 500 ft / 200 s

V = 2.5 ft/s

Example 2:

A car travels a distance of one mile in one hour. Calculate its speed in ft/s.

Solution:

First, convert miles to feet and hours to seconds.

1 mile = 5280 ft

1 hour = 3600 s

V = d / t

V = 5280 ft / 3600 s

V ≈ 1.47 ft/s

Conclusion:

Calculating feet per second is a simple process involving only one formula. Remember to use compatible units, and you’ll be able to calculate velocity in ft/s with ease. It’s an important skill that can be applied in various fields, from sports analytics to engineering.
