In today’s highly competitive market, organizations are always on the lookout for effective ways to streamline their recruitment processes. One essential metric that helps businesses evaluate the efficiency of their hiring is cost per hire. By understanding their cost per hire, companies can optimize their recruiting strategies and fine-tune their budgets. This article will provide a comprehensive guide on how to calculate cost per hire.

What is Cost per Hire?

Cost per hire refers to the total amount of money spent by an organization during the recruitment process to fill a vacancy. The goal is to minimize this expenditure while still attracting the best candidates for the job.

How to Calculate Cost per Hire

Cost per hire comprises two main components: external costs and internal costs. To calculate this metric, you need to follow these steps:

1. Determine Internal Costs: Internal costs are expenses incurred within your organization during the hiring process. These include:

a. Recruiting team salaries

b. Administrative costs (office supplies, software subscriptions)

c. Employer branding expenses (career page updates, promotional materials)Add up these costs to get your total internal costs.

2. Determine External Costs: External costs are expenses paid to external parties involved in the hiring process, such as:

a. Advertising (job posting fees, social media ads)

b. Recruitment agency fees

c. Job fair participation fees

d. Background check fees

e. Referral bonuses (if applicable)

Add up these costs to get your total external costs.

3. Add Internal and External Costs: Combine your total internal and external costs to get your overall hiring expenditure.

4. Calculate Total Number of Hires: To find out the number of new hires during a specific period (usually annually), add up the number of successful candidates who joined your company during that time frame.

5. Calculate Cost per Hire: Finally, divide your total hiring expenditure by the total number of hires to obtain your cost per hire.

Cost per Hire = (Total Internal Costs + Total External Costs) / Total Number of Hires

Conclusion

Calculating cost per hire is crucial for organizations seeking to optimize their recruitment processes and improve their bottom line. By breaking down your spending into internal and external costs and closely monitoring this metric over time, you will be in a better position to identify areas for improvement. Ensure that you regularly analyze your cost per hire and use it as a guide to streamline your hiring processes, making them both cost-effective and efficient.
