Introduction:

Calculating board feet is an essential skill for anyone working with wood, such as carpenters, builders, and DIY enthusiasts. Board feet is a measurement unit used to determine the volume of lumber in terms of its width, length, and thickness. In this article, we will guide you through a straightforward 7-step process to calculate board feet accurately.

Step 1: Gather Required Tools

To calculate board feet, you will need a measuring tape or ruler and a calculator. You may also use an online board foot calculator if you prefer. Ensure the measuring tools are accurate and easy to read.

Step 2: Measure The Length

Measure the full length of the wooden board in feet and record it. If you have multiple boards of different lengths, repeat this step for each one.

Step 3: Measure The Width

Next, measure the entire width of the wooden board in inches and record it. Just like the length, if you have multiple boards with different widths, measure each one individually.

Step 4: Measure The Thickness

Now, measure the thickness of the wooden board in inches. If you’re working with multiple boards that vary in thickness, measure them separately.

Step 5: Convert Measurements To Decimal Units

If any of your measurements are in fractions (e.g., 3/4 inch), convert them into decimal units for easy calculation. You can use an online converter or refer to a fractions-to-decimals chart.

Step 6: Calculate Board Feet

Use the following formula to calculate board feet:

Board Feet (BF) = Length (in feet) x Width (in inches) x Thickness (in inches) / 12

Multiply the length by the width and then by the thickness (all numbers should be in their decimal forms). Finally, divide your result by 12 to get your calculated board footage.

Step 7: Add The Results For Multiple Boards

In case you are calculating the board feet for several pieces of lumber, add the results from each calculation together to get the total board footage.

Conclusion:

Knowing how to calculate board feet accurately is a skill that will save you time and money when working with wood. Follow these seven simple steps to ensure you have the correct measurements for your project. Once you’ve gotten comfortable with calculating board feet, consider using an online calculator or even develop a mental estimation skill to speed up the process.
