Introduction

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used tool to assess a person’s weight relative to their height. It helps in determining whether an individual is overweight, underweight, or has an ideal weight. Calculating BMI manually can be a convenient and quick way to track changes in your weight and health goals.

In this article, we will guide you through a step-by-step process on how to calculate your BMI manually using the metric and imperial systems.

Metric System:

Step 1: Measure Your Height and Weight

For the metric system, you’ll need to have your height in meters (m) and your weight in kilograms (kg). To do this, measure your height using a tape measure or a long ruler. Next, weigh yourself using bathroom scales ensuring that both measurements are accurate.

Step 2: Calculate Your BMI

Once you have your height and weight in meters (m) and kilograms (kg), use the following formula:

BMI = Weight (kg) / Height² (m)

Example:

Suppose that an individual weighs 70 kilograms and has a height of 1.7 meters.

BMI = 70 / (1.7 x 1.7)

BMI = 70 / 2.89

BMI = 24.22

Imperial System:

Step 1: Measure Your Height and Weight

For the imperial system, you’ll need to have your height in inches (in) and your weight in pounds (lbs). Use a tape measure or a long ruler to measure your height and weigh yourself using bathroom scales ensuring that both measurements are accurate.

Step 2: Calculate Your BMI

Once you have your height in inches (in) and weight in pounds (lbs), use the following formula:

BMI = Weight (lbs) / Height² (in) * 703

Example:

Suppose that an individual weighs 154 pounds and has a height of 67 inches.

BMI = 154 / (67 x 67) * 703

BMI = 154 / (4489) * 703

BMI = 24.28

Interpreting Your BMI:

After calculating your BMI, you can use the following categories to understand your results:

– Underweight: BMI < 18.5

– Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9

– Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9

– Obese (Obesity Class I): BMI between 30 and 34.9

– Severe obesity (Obesity Class II): BMI between 35 and 39.9

– Morbidly obese (Obesity Class III): BMI > 40

Conclusion

Calculating your BMI manually is a simple process that provides you with essential information about your weight relative to your height. By following the steps mentioned above, you can easily monitor your fitness progress and make necessary adjustments to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Keep in mind that while BMI serves as a useful indicator for general health, it has certain limitations and should be used in conjunction with other assessments such as body composition analysis or consultation with a medical professional for a more comprehensive understanding of your health status.
