Introduction

In Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition (5e), combat is a critical aspect of the game that requires both strategy and good fortune to emerge victorious. One important factor that can tip the scales in your favor is the attack bonus. It helps determine whether your character’s attack hits or misses an opponent. This article will provide step-by-step instructions on how to calculate attack bonuses in 5e, ensuring better chances of success during battles.

Step 1: Determine Your Ability Modifier

The ability modifier is derived from the ability score relevant to the weapon type your character uses:

– For melee weapons, use the Strength modifier

– For ranged weapons, use the Dexterity modifier

– For weapons with the “finesse” property, you can choose between Strength or Dexterity modifier

– For spells, use the spellcasting ability (Intelligence for wizards, Wisdom for clerics and druids, Charisma for bards, sorcerers, and paladins)

To find the ability modifier, subtract 10 from the appropriate ability score and then divide the result by 2, rounding down.

Example:

Strength Score: 15

(15 – 10) / 2 = 2.5 → Round down to 2

Strength Modifier: +2

Step 2: Add Proficiency Bonus (If Applicable)

If your character is proficient with a specific weapon or spell, add their proficiency bonus to the attack roll. The proficiency bonus depends on your character’s level and can be found in their class description table.

Example:

Level: 3

Proficiency Bonus: +2

Step 3: Include Any Relevant Bonuses

Don’t forget to add other bonuses that may increase your attack bonus. These can come from magic items, feats, class features, or spells.

Examples:

– Archery Fighting Style (Fighter or Ranger): +2 bonus to attack rolls with ranged weapons

– Bless Spell: +1d4 to attack rolls

– Magic Weapon: +1, +2, or +3, depending on the weapon enchantment

Step 4: Calculate Your Attack Bonus

Add the ability modifier, proficiency bonus (if applicable), and any other relevant bonuses. The final sum is your attack bonus.

Attack Bonus Calculation:

Ability Modifier + Proficiency Bonus (if applicable) + Other Bonuses = Attack Bonus

Example:

Strength Modifier: +2

Proficiency Bonus: +2 (proficient with a longsword)

No other bonuses

Attack Bonus: 2 + 2 = +4

Conclusion

Knowing how to calculate attack bonus in Dungeons and Dragons 5e can make all the difference in battles. By adding the relevant ability modifier, proficiency bonus, and other situational bonuses correctly, you can improve your character’s chances of landing hits on opponents. Keep these steps in mind as you venture through perilous dungeons and fight formidable foes on your way to becoming a legendary hero!
