Introduction:

Understanding how to calculate an increase percentage is essential for various applications, such as evaluating business growth, tracking personal savings, or determining the extent of price changes over time. Fortunately, calculating percentage increase is a straightforward process. In this article, we will walk you through the steps to calculate an increase percentage accurately.

Step 1: Establish the Initial and Final Values

First, you need to identify the initial value (also known as the starting or original value) and the final value (the updated or new value). The initial value refers to the amount before any increase has occurred, while the final value denotes the amount after an increment.

For example, let’s say a product’s price has increased from $100 to $120. The initial value would be $100, and the final value would be $120.

Step 2: Find the Difference between Both Values

Next, subtract the initial value from the final value:

Final Value – Initial Value = Difference

Using our example:

$120 – $100 = $20

The difference between both values is $20.

Step 3: Divide the Difference by the Initial Value and Multiply by 100

Now that you have found out the difference between both values ($20 in our example), it’s time to calculate the percentage increase. To do this, divide the difference by the initial value and multiply by 100:

(Difference / Initial Value) x 100 = Percentage Increase

Applying this formula to our example:

($20 / $100) x 100 = 20%

The percentage increase in this situation is 20%.

Step 4: Interpret your results

Once you have determined your percentage increase (20% in our example), you can interpret or explain what this means. In terms of our product price scenario, it signifies that there has been a 20% increase in price from its original value.

Conclusion:

Calculating an increase percentage is an essential skill for understanding price fluctuations, financial growth, and other changes over time. Following the straightforward process outlined in this article will enable you to determine increase percentages with ease. Ensure you have a clear picture of your initial and final values, then follow the steps to find the difference, divide by the initial value, and multiply by 100 for accurate results.
