How to Build Drawers for a Desk
If you’ve decided to build your own desk to work or study more comfortably, adding drawers is an excellent way to maximize functionality and storage space. In this article, we’ll walk you through the entire process of building drawers for your desk.
Materials and Tools Needed:
1. Plywood or particleboard (for drawer boxes)
2. Drawer front material (optional)
3. Sandpaper
4. Wood glue
5. Screws
6. Screwdriver (or drill)
7. Measuring tape
8. Straight edge or square
9. Pencil
10. Table saw or circular saw
11. Router and rabbeting bit (optional)
12. Drawer slides
Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Measure and Plan Your Drawers: Determine the size, number, and placement of the drawers on your desk. Measure the available space in width, depth, and height to ensure proper fitting of your drawers.
2. Choose Your Materials: Select the material you’ll use for building the drawer boxes (plywood or particleboard is commonly used) and drawer fronts if desired.
3. Cut Pieces for the Drawer Box: Using a table saw or circular saw, cut the front, back, sides, and bottom pieces for each drawer box based on your measurements from step 1.
4. Smooth Edges: Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges on all the pieces of wood you’ve cut.
5. Assemble the Drawer Box: With wood glue, attach the sides of the drawer box to the front and back pieces, forming a rectangle. Ensure that everything aligns properly with your right angles before allowing it to dry.
6. Attach Bottom Piece: Once the wood glue is dry, attach the bottom piece using wood screws from below going upward into each corner piece.
7a (Optional): Create a Rabbet Joint: If you want more durability, create a rabbet joint using a router and rabbeting bit to cut a groove along the side and bottom panels of the drawer. This accommodates the thickness of the front and back panels, allowing for a flush fit.
7b (Optional): Assemble with Rabbet Joints: Apply wood glue to the joints and insert each panel into the corresponding groove. Clamp everything securely and let it dry.
8. Attach Drawer Slides: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the drawer slides on both sides of your drawer box and inside the desk frame.
9. Create and Attach Drawer Fronts (optional): If you decided to add drawer fronts, cut them slightly larger than the opening size to conceal any gaps. Secure them to the drawer box by screwing from the inside, behind the front panel.
10. Finish and Install Drawers: Smooth any rough edges or imperfections with sandpaper, apply your desired finish or paint, and install your new drawers on their slides.
By following this step-by-step guide, you can now enjoy extra storage in your custom-built desk with functional drawers that will stand up to daily use. Happy building!
