Step 1: Determine the dimensions

First, decide on the dimensions for your workbench top – the length, width, and thickness you prefer based on your workspace and needs.

Step 2: Cut the top and bottom layers

Using your table saw or circular saw with a straight edge guide, cut both MDF or plywood pieces to size according to the dimensions you’ve chosen.

Step 3: Cut internal grid strips

The internal grid will consist of perpendicular strips of lumber which form a series of rectangles inside the box, providing reinforcement. Using your miter saw or hand saw, cut enough strips to create this internal structure.

Step 4: Assemble the internal grid

Step 6: Attach the top layer

Apply wood glue over the top of the grid and carefully lay the second MDF or plywood sheet on top. Align all edges and corners, then clamp the two pieces together firmly.

Step 7: Fasten the layers together

Using screws or nails, fasten both layers of MDF or plywood together along their perimeter and within each rectangle of your grid. Be sure that the fasteners reach through both layers of your board material.

Step 8: Sand and finish

Once everything is securely fastened, sand the entire surface of your torsion box tabletop to ensure it is smooth and flat. Apply a finish of your choice, such as polyurethane or varnish, to protect the surface from moisture and wear.
