How to Brush Your Teeth With Braces On

Introduction

Braces are a fantastic tool for straightening and aligning your teeth. However, they also present their own set of challenges when it comes to oral hygiene. With braces on, you have various wires, brackets, and bands that can trap food particles and make brushing your teeth more complicated. In this article, we will guide you through the process of effectively brushing your teeth with braces on.

1. Gather your tools

Before you start brushing, ensure you have the following items handy:

– A soft-bristled toothbrush

– Fluoride toothpaste

– An interdental brush/orthodontic brush (a small brush designed specifically for braces)

– Dental floss (using a floss threader or orthodontic floss)

2. Rinse your mouth

Begin by swishing water around in your mouth. This will help to dislodge larger food particles that may be trapped in your braces.

3. Apply toothpaste to your toothbrush

Squeeze a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste onto your soft-bristled toothbrush.

4. Position the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle

Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your teeth to ensure that the bristles reach beneath the gum line and behind each bracket.

5. Brush using gentle circular motions

Move the toothbrush in circular motions, applying gentle pressure as you brush. Make sure to cover all surfaces of each tooth – the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces. Spend about 10 seconds on each tooth, taking extra care around the braces.

6. Clean around the brackets

Using an interdental/orthodontic brush, carefully clean around each bracket, wire, and band in both upper and lower jaws. Be sure to get into the tiny spaces where toothbrush bristles may have trouble reaching.

7. Floss your teeth

Flossing is crucial while having braces as it helps clean between the teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss to make the process easier. Gently guide the floss between each tooth, reaching as close to the gum line as possible. Floss behind the wires of your braces as well.

8. Rinse with mouthwash (optional)

If you choose to use mouthwash, swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds to help remove any remaining debris and strengthen your tooth enamel.

9. Inspect your teeth and braces

Take a close look at your teeth and braces, checking for any areas you might have missed. If necessary, perform additional brushing or flossing to make sure everything is spotless.

10. Maintain a routine

Brush and floss your teeth twice a day, preferably in the morning and before going to bed, to maintain good oral hygiene while wearing braces. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings can also help ensure that your teeth stay clean and healthy during orthodontic treatment.

Conclusion

Proper oral hygiene is crucial when wearing braces, as food particles trapped in the brackets and wires can lead to cavities or gum issues if not addressed correctly. Follow this step-by-step guide to effectively brush and floss your teeth with braces on, ensuring that your smile remains healthy while achieving the desired outcome of straighter teeth.
