How to Broil Salmon: 11 Steps

Salmon is a delicious and healthy protein option that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. One popular method of cooking salmon is broiling, which involves using high heat from the top to create a flavorful, crispy crust while keeping the inside moist and tender. Here are 11 steps to help you broil salmon like a pro:

1. Choose fresh salmon: Select a high-quality salmon fillet or steak with firm flesh and bright color. A fresh, mild scent indicates the fish is at its peak quality.

2. Preheat the broiler: Before preparing the salmon, turn on your oven’s broiler setting and allow it to preheat for at least five minutes.

3. Prepare the salmon: Rinse the salmon under cold water to remove any debris or scales, then gently pat it dry with paper towels.

4. Trim excess fat: Trim away any excess fat or skin from the edges of the salmon to ensure even cooking.

5. Season the salmon: Add your desired seasoning to the salmon. It could be as simple as salt, pepper, and olive oil or a marinade of your choice. Allow the flavors to set by letting the seasoned fish rest for about 10 minutes.

6. Line a baking sheet: Line an oven-safe baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper to help with easy cleanup and prevent sticking.

7. Place the salmon on the baking sheet: Arrange the seasoned salmon on your prepared baking sheet with enough space between each piece so they don’t touch when they cook.

8. Position your oven rack: Adjust your oven rack so that it is about 4-6 inches beneath the heating element. This distance helps ensure even cooking and prevents burning.

9. Place baking sheet into the oven: Carefully slide your baking sheet into the preheated oven on your chosen rack position.

10. Broil the salmon: Broiling times can vary depending on thickness, so keep an eye on your salmon to prevent overcooking. As a general guideline, broil the salmon for about 10-12 minutes for an inch-thick fillet or steak or approximately 4-6 minutes per half-inch of thickness. The salmon should be lightly crisped on top and cooked through but still slightly translucent in the very center.

11. Remove and rest: Take the salmon out of the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. This allows the residual heat to finish cooking the fish and locks in its natural juices.

Following these 11 steps will have you broiling salmon like a pro in no time. Pair your perfectly cooked fish with steamed vegetables or a fresh salad for a delicious and nutritious meal!
