How to Bread Fish: 11 Steps

Breading fish is a popular cooking method that adds a crispy and delicious layer to your favorite seafood dish. Follow these 11 easy steps to learn how to bread fish at home.
1. Gather your ingredients: To bread fish, you will need fish fillets, all-purpose flour, breadcrumbs (or panko), and eggs. Choose a fish with firm yet tender flesh, such as cod, halibut, or tilapia.
2. Prepare the fish: Rinse the fish fillets under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. Remove any skin or bones if necessary.
3. Season the fish: Generously season the fish fillets with salt, pepper, and any other desired spices or herbs.
4. Set up your breading station: You will need three shallow dishes for breading your fish. In the first dish, place the all-purpose flour; in the second dish, whisk together the eggs; in the third dish, pour the breadcrumbs or panko.
5. Dredge in flour: One at a time, gently press both sides of each seasoned fish fillet into the flour, shaking off any excess.
6. Dip in egg: After dredging the fillet in flour, dip it into the egg mixture. Make sure to coat both sides of the fillet evenly, and allow any excess egg to drip off.
7. Coat with breadcrumbs: Press both sides of the eggy fillet into the breadcrumbs (or panko), making sure that it is fully coated and no wet spots remain.
8. Set aside: Place each breaded fillet on a wire rack or plate as you finish breading them. This will allow air circulation around each piece and help maintain their crispiness when cooking.
9. Heat oil: Fill a deep skillet or frying pan with about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil or another high smoke point oil. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches around 375°F (190°C).
10. Fry breaded fish: Once your oil is hot, gently lower breaded fillets into the oil using a slotted spatula or tongs. Cook each fillet for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) and have a golden-brown crust.
11. Remove and rest: When your fish is cooked through, carefully remove them from the oil using a slotted spatula or tongs. Allow them to rest on a wire rack or a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Now you’re ready to serve your delicious breaded fish! Enjoy the beautifully crisp coating and tender, moist fish inside with some tartar sauce, lemon wedges, and your favorite side dishes.
