How to Braid Garlic: 14 Steps
Garlic is not only a flavorful and healthy addition to many dishes but also a beautiful ornamental piece when braided. Braiding garlic is an excellent way to preserve your garlic harvest, and it’s quite easy to learn. This article will guide you through the 14 steps to braid garlic in a stylish and functional manner.
1. Gather the necessary materials: You will need freshly harvested garlic, twine or string, and scissors.
2. Clean the garlic: Gently brush off any dirt or debris from the garlic bulbs and roots. Take care not to damage the cloves or remove too much of their skin.
3. Trim the roots: Using scissors, trim the roots to about half an inch in length.
4. Sort the garlic: Separate your garlic by size, as you’ll want to use the larger bulbs in the center of your braid for even distribution.
5. Select three large bulbs: Choose three of your largest bulbs with long, sturdy stems to start the braid foundation.
6. Tie the stems together: Using a piece of twine or string, securely tie the stems of the three bulbs together just below where they join with the bulb.
7. Start braiding: Hold the tied-off stems in one hand and begin braiding by crossing the left stem over the middle stem, then crossing right stem over (now) middle stem. Continue this pattern several times before adding more bulbs.
8. Add a new bulb: Choose a large bulb with a long stem and place it under the right-hand stem before crossing it over into the middle. Make sure there is no slack in this new addition and pull tight after each cross-over.
9. Repeat on opposite side: Add another large bulb under the left-hand stem, then cross it over into the middle while maintaining tension for a uniform appearance.
10. Continue braiding and adding garlic: Continue to alternate sides as you braid, consistently adding bulbs under the outer stems and crossing them over the middle, following the size pattern you’ve established.
11. Finish with smaller bulbs: As you come near the end of your braid, begin incorporating smaller bulbs towards the top until all garlic has been used.
12. Complete the braid: Once all bulbs have been included, continue braiding the stems for a few more inches before tying off the end with a piece of twine or string.
13. Create a hanging loop: Using another piece of twine or string, make a loop at the end of your braid by tying it around the area where you initially tied off the three starter stems.
14. Store your braided garlic: Hang your garlic braid in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to help preserve its flavor and longevity.
With these 14 steps, you now have a beautifully braided garlic strand that not only serves as an attractive display but also keeps your fresh garlic within easy reach for everyday cooking! Enjoy both its visual appeal and culinary benefits!
