Booting from a USB device is a great way to install a new operating system or perform troubleshooting on a computer. It can also be useful if your computer’s CD/DVD drive is not working properly. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to boot from a USB device:

Step 1: Check Your BIOS Settings

Before you start, you need to make sure that your computer can boot from a USB device. To do this, you need to enter your computer’s BIOS setup. The exact key to enter the setup depends on your computer’s brand and model, but it is usually the F2, F10, or Delete key. Once you’re in the BIOS setup, look for the Boot menu and make sure that USB is listed as a boot option.

Step 2: Create a Bootable USB Drive

To boot from a USB device, you need to create a bootable USB drive. There are many tools available for this, but one of the most popular is Rufus. Download and run Rufus, select your USB drive, and choose the ISO file of the operating system you want to install or the diagnostic tool you want to use. Click Start and wait for Rufus to create the bootable USB drive.

Step 3: Insert the USB Drive and Reboot Your Computer

Once you have a bootable USB drive, insert it into your computer’s USB port and reboot your computer. As soon as your computer starts to boot, press the key to enter the boot menu. Again, the exact key depends on your computer’s brand and model, but it is usually F12, F10, or Escape. From the boot menu, select the USB drive as the boot device and press Enter.

Step 4: Follow the Prompts

Now that your computer is booting from the USB drive, you will see the installation or diagnostic tool menu on your screen. Follow the prompts to install your operating system or run your diagnostic tool. Be sure to read the instructions carefully and select the appropriate options.

In Conclusion

Boot from a USB device is a useful way to install a new operating system or troubleshoot a computer. By following the above steps, you can easily create a bootable USB drive and boot from it. Just make sure that you know the key to enter the BIOS setup and the boot menu and check that USB is listed as a boot option in the BIOS settings.
