Balancing your tires is an essential part of vehicle maintenance that can help prolong tire life, improve fuel efficiency, and provide a smoother and more comfortable ride. Here are 11 steps to follow when balancing your tires.

1. Gather the necessary tools: Before you begin, make sure you have a wheel balancer, weights for balancing, a wheel weight pliers, a lug wrench, a tire pressure gauge, and a jack.

2. Park on a level surface: Find a flat, level surface to perform the tire balancing; this ensures accurate results.

3. Secure your vehicle: Apply the parking brake and use wheel chocks to prevent your car from moving accidentally during the process.

4. Check tire pressure: Properly inflated tires are crucial when balancing, so use your tire pressure gauge to ensure correct inflation levels per your vehicle’s owner manual.

5. Loosen lug nuts: Before jacking up your vehicle, slightly loosen the lug nuts on the wheel you’re about to balance.

6. Raise the vehicle: Position the jack under the appropriate jacking point for your car (consult owner manual) and raise the car until the tire is off the ground.

7. Remove the wheel: Fully loosen and remove all lug nuts from bolts using the lug wrench. Carefully pull off the wheel from the hub assembly.

8. Mount on wheel balancer: Follow your wheel balancer’s instructions to securely mount and position the wheel once removed from your car.

9. Measure imbalance: Turn on your balancer and engage with its calibration process as instructed by its manual. Once calibrated, it will identify any imbalances in the tire as well as recommend where to place additional weights for optimal balance.

10. Apply weights: Using weight pliers, attach recommended weights onto designated spots on the inner and outer rims of your wheel until properly balanced as indicated by the balancer.

11. Reinstall the wheel: Align and reattach the wheel, making sure to tighten lug nuts evenly – though not fully. Lower the car back onto the ground, after which you can fully tighten all lug nuts in a star pattern. Check tire pressure once more before driving.

By following these 11 steps, you’ll effectively balance your tires, which will contribute to a smoother ride, increased tire life, and improved fuel efficiency. Regularly balance your tires as part of routine maintenance for optimal vehicle performance.
