How to Apply Ipe Oil

Introduction

Ipe wood, originating from South America, is known for its beauty, durability, and resistance against decay and common wood issues. To preserve and enhance the natural color and longevity of this exotic hardwood, applying Ipe oil is a crucial step. This oil acts as a sealant, protecting it from UV rays, moisture, and other damaging factors. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of applying Ipe oil to ensure your ipe wood continues to look stunning for years to come.

Materials Needed

1. Ipe oil

2. Gloves

3. Clean cloth or rags

4. Paintbrush or staining pad

5. Paint roller with extension pole (optional)

6. Paint tray

7. Tarp or drop cloth

8. Painter’s tape (if needed)
Steps to Apply Ipe Oil

1. Prepare the Surface: Before applying Ipe oil, make sure your wood is clean and dry. Sweep away debris with a broom or brush. If the surface is dirty or has mildew, clean it using a wood cleaner specifically designed for use with hardwoods like ipe.

2. Protect Surrounding Areas: Lay down a tarp or drop cloth around the area where you will be applying the Ipe oil to catch any drips or spills. If working near any edges or areas you do not want stained, use painter’s tape to mask off these surfaces.

3. Stir the Ipe Oil: Open your can of Ipe oil and gently stir it before use. Do not shake the can as this may introduce air bubbles into the product.

4. Apply Ipe Oil: Dip your paintbrush or staining pad into the Ipe oil until it’s fully soaked but not dripping excessively. Starting at one end of your wood surface, apply even strokes along the entire length of the wood grain. If you cannot reach the entire area with a handheld brush or applicator, attach a paint roller with an extension pole to ensure proper coverage.

5. Coat Consistently: Make sure to apply a consistent, even coat of Ipe oil across the entire wood surface. Avoid pooling or creating “heavy” spots by evenly distributing the oil.

6. Wipe Off Excess Oil: Wait approximately 15-30 minutes for the Ipe oil to penetrate the wood grain. Then, use a clean cloth or rag to gently wipe off any excess oil from the surface. Be thorough in removing excess oil, as it can become sticky and cause adherence problems if not properly wiped clean.

7. Allow to Dry: Leave your wood surface to dry for at least 24 hours or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations before walking or placing furniture on it.

8. Maintain Your Wood: Over time, Ipe oil will naturally fade due to weathering and exposure to UV rays. To maintain optimal protection and appearance, reapply Ipe oil annually depending on your specific environmental conditions.

Conclusion

Applying Ipe oil is a simple but critical step in maintaining the durability and beauty of your ipe wood surfaces. By following these steps and regular maintenance, you can preserve and protect your ipe wood investment, ensuring its stunning natural appearance lasts for years to come.
