How to Apply for an LDS Mission

Applying to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) can be an enriching and fulfilling experience. However, the application process can appear daunting for those who are unfamiliar with it. In this article, we will break down the steps necessary to apply for an LDS mission, making the process more accessible and easier to understand.

Step 1: Prepare Yourself Spiritually and Mentally

Before you begin the application process, take some time to evaluate your spiritual preparedness. This may involve personal study, scripture reading, prayer, and discussing your plans with family members and church leaders. It’s essential to ensure that you have a firm understanding and testimony of the gospel principles.

Step 2: Meet with Your Bishop or Branch President

A conversation with your Bishop or Branch President is crucial both for their guidance and their role in your application process. They can offer valuable insights, advice, and direction as you begin your journey towards full-time mission service.

Step 3: Medical and Dental Exams

You must complete a medical form detailing your previous medical history to ensure you are healthy enough for missionary service. This typically includes a physical examination by a healthcare professional. Additionally, a dental exam is required to help identify any potential dental issues before beginning service.

Step 4: Complete Online Mission Application

Once you’ve met with your Bishop or Branch President, they’ll provide you access to the online missionary application form. Take some time filling this out in its entirety. The form will ask for personal information such as name, contact information, education history, past church experiences, language skills (if you have any), and other relevant details.

Step 5: Submit Your Application

After completing the online application form and receiving clearance from your medical and dental professionals, submit your application! Your Bishop or Branch President will review it one more time before sending it to the Missionary Department of the Church for further evaluation.

Step 6: Await Your Call

Once your application is submitted, patiently await your mission call. This may take a few weeks or even several months, depending on the current submission volume and processing time required. Keep in mind that mission calls are inspired, and the process discerning the best mission assignment for each individual takes time.

Step 7: Receive Your Mission Call

When you receive your mission call package in the mail, set aside some time to open it and read your call letter with family and friends. This moment is often filled with excitement, emotion, and anticipation as you prepare to embark on your missionary journey.

Step 8: Prepare for Departure

Once you have received and accepted your mission call, preparations will need to be made for departure. This may include obtaining a passport and necessary visas or immunizations, attending a pre-mission church orientation, learning more about the culture of your assigned area, and purchasing clothing appropriate for your mission environment.

In conclusion, applying for an LDS mission involves several key steps: spiritual and mental preparation, discussions with church leaders, medical clearance, completing an application form, receipt of a mission call letter, preparation for departure, and finally heading off to commence missionary service. Following these guidelines will help streamline the process as you embark on this significant journey of faith and personal growth.
