Adobe Illustrator is a versatile vector graphics software that offers various tools for creating professional designs and artwork. Among the many features it provides, adding borders is a common technique utilized by designers to enhance their creations. In this article, we will discuss how to add borders in Adobe Illustrator through a step-by-step guide.

1. Launch Adobe Illustrator and open your project:

Start by opening the Adobe Illustrator application and either create a new document or open an existing project.

2. Create or select the desired object:

To add a border in Illustrator, you need to have an object or path to apply it. You can either create a new shape using tools such as the Rectangle, Ellipse, or Pen tools from the Toolbar or select an existing object with the Selection Tool (V).

3. Set Stroke color:

In the Properties panel on the right side of your screen, find the Stroke section and click on the colored box next to the word “Stroke.” Choose your desired border color from the Color Picker that appears.

4. Adjust stroke weight:

After selecting the color for your border, set its thickness by adjusting the stroke weight value next to the colored box. You can either use slider arrows, type in your preferred value, or select from predefined values provided in the dropdown menu.

5. Add stroke alignment:

Illustrator provides three options for stroke alignment: center, inside, and outside. Determine which option suits your design best and click on it. This feature is particularly helpful when you want to control how thick lines appear around objects.

6. Apply stroke styles:

To further customize your border, you can experiment with different stroke styles available in Illustrator. Click on ‘Stroke’ in the Properties panel to bring up additional options like Dashed Line and Arrowheads settings.

7. Edit corners and caps:

In this same Stroke Panel, you’ll find options called “Caps” and “Corners” that allow you to customize the appearance of your stroke. You can select from various options to create square or rounded endings and corners for your border.

8. Add an offset border:

If you desire to have a border that’s not directly on the object edge, use the Offset Path feature in Illustrator. Navigate to Object > Path > Offset Path, and specify your desired offset distance in the dialog box that appears.

9. Save your project:

Once you have completed adding and customizing your border, save your Illustrator project by clicking File > Save (Ctrl/Cmd + S).
With these simple steps, you can proficiently add borders to any object in Adobe Illustrator. Don’t be afraid to try out different stroke styles, colors, and weights to create visually appealing designs. Happy designing!
