How Much Targaryen Blood Do You Need To Ride A Dragon?

In the world of Westeros, dragons have long been a symbol of power and prestige, particularly for the esteemed Houses of the Seven Kingdoms. The Targaryen bloodline, specifically, has a storied history of dragon riders, with the most famous being Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons. But have you ever wondered if having Targaryen blood is the only requirement to ride a dragon? Can anyone with a bit of Targaryen ancestry hoist the saddle and soar the skies on the back of a majestic dragon?

The answer is, unfortunately, no. While Targaryen blood is certainly a significant factor, it’s not the only one. In fact, there are several examples throughout the history of Westeros where individuals without Targaryen blood have successfully ridden dragons. Take, for instance, the case of Ser Rhaegar Targaryen, who rode the dragon Balerion the Black, despite being a half-Targaryen. His mother, Princess Rhaella, was a Targaryen, but his father was Rhaegar’s father, Prince Aegon V Targaryen.

So, what does it take to ride a dragon, then? Is it a combination of biology, skill, and sheer force of will? While there is no concrete formula, experts in the field of dragon riding suggest that a combination of the following factors can contribute to one’s ability to ride a dragon:

1. Bloodlines: As mentioned earlier, having Targaryen blood or blood from a known dragon-mounting lineage can increase the chances of being able to ride a dragon. However, it’s not a guarantee, and other bloodlines have successfully ridden dragons throughout history.
2. Magical affinity: Some individuals possess a natural affinity for magic, which can be a key factor in communicating with dragons. This affinity is often tied to the bloodlines, but not exclusively.
3. Dragon training: Rodeoing a dragon requires extensive training, both in the skies and on the ground. A rider must be able to understand the dragon’s body language, communicate effectively, and possess the physical stamina to withstand the stress of flight.
4. Respect and connection: A deep respect and connection to the dragon is crucial. Rhyllor, the legendary dragon-riding chronicler, speaks of the importance of “singing” to the dragons, which involves a harmonious resonance between the rider and the dragon. This connection is believed to foster a trust and understanding that allows for successful communication.

In conclusion, while having Targaryen blood can certainly increase the chances of riding a dragon, it’s by no means the only requirement. Successful dragon riding requires a combination of biological affinity, magical affinity, training, and a deep connection to the dragon itself. Who knows? Perhaps, one day, we’ll see a new generation of dragon riders emerge from the Seven Kingdoms, defying the traditional notion that Targaryen blood is a necessity.
