How is Molality Calculated

The understanding of the relationship between solute and solvent concentrations in a solution is essential for many practical, scientific, and industrial applications. In chemistry, molality is one such concentration measurement that plays a vital role in various processes. This article will guide you on how to calculate molality and its significance.

Defining Molality

Molality (represented by the lowercase letter ‘m’) is defined as the number of moles of solute dissolved per kilogram of solvent in a solution. Unlike molarity, molality is unaffected by changes in temperature and pressure because it depends on the mass instead of the volume of the solvent.

Molality Calculation

To calculate molality (m), simply follow this formula:

m = moles of solute / mass of solvent (in kg)

Let’s break down the steps involved in calculating molality:

1. Determine the moles of solute:

Determine the amount of solute in your solution and convert it into moles. This can be done using the molecular weight (or molar mass) of the solute, which can typically be found on a periodic table or through online resources.

Moles of solute = mass of solute (in grams) / molecular weight (in g/mol)

2. Convert solvent mass to kilograms:

Determine the mass of your solvent and convert it from grams to kilograms by dividing by 1,000.

Mass of solvent (in kg) = mass of solvent (in grams) / 1,000

3. Calculate molality:

Divide the moles of solute by the mass of the solvent (in kg).

m = moles of solute / mass of solvent (in kg)

Example Calculation

Suppose you have 20 grams of sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolved in 500 grams of water. Calculate the molality of the sodium chloride solution.

Step 1: Determine the moles of solute.

Molecular weight of NaCl = 58.44 g/mol

Moles of NaCl = 20 grams / 58.44 g/mol = 0.3426 moles

Step 2: Convert solvent mass to kilograms.

Mass of water (in kg) = 500 grams / 1,000 = 0.5 kg

Step 3: Calculate molality.

m = moles of solute / mass of solvent (in kg)

m = 0.3426 moles / 0.5 kg = 0.6852 mol/kg

Thus, the molality of this sodium chloride solution is 0.6852 mol/kg.
