How is CRSC Calculated? A Comprehensive Guide

Introduction

Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) is a United States Department of Defense (DoD) program designed to provide financial compensation to retired military personnel with combat-related disabilities. This compensation comes in the form of a monthly payment and is intended to supplement the military retirement pay. The CRSC calculation might seem complex at first glance, but breaking it down into its components can help you understand how it works.

The CRSC Calculation Process

Before diving into the calculations, it’s essential to understand the eligibility criteria for CRSC. To qualify, the veteran must:

1. Be receiving military retirement pay

2. Have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)

3. Have served on active duty during an eligible period (e.g., wartime or other hazardous military operations), and

4. Have their military retirement pay reduced by the amount of VA disability compensation received.

If you meet these requirements, you are eligible for CRSC, regardless of whether your retirement was regular or based on medical reasons.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how CRSC is calculated:

Step 1: Determine the Gross Military Retirement Pay

First, calculate your gross military retirement pay by multiplying your highest 36 months of basic pay by your years in service and then by 2.5% (or follow an alternate formula if applicable).

Step 2: Calculate VA Disability Offset

Next, calculate the VA disability offset, which is the dollar amount of VA disability compensation you receive each month.

Step 3: Establish the Net Military Retirement Pay

Subtract your VA disability offset (step 2) from your gross military retirement pay (step 1) to
establish your net military retirement pay.

Step 4: Calculate Longevity-Based Retirement Pay

Determine your maximum longevity-based retirement pay as follows:

a) For those who joined the military before September 8, 1980: Longevity-based retirement pay
= Years of service x 2.5% x Final basic pay

b) For those who joined the military on or after September 8, 1980: Longevity-based retirement pay = Years of service x 2.5% x High-36 average basic pay

Step 5: Determine CRSC Award Calculation Entitlement

The CRSC award calculation considers your years of service, combined disability rating percentage, and maximum longevity-based retirement pay. The award is calculated based on the lesser of the following two amounts:

a) The combined disability percentage multiplied by the gross military retirement multiplier, or

b) The maximum longevity-based retirement pay.

Step 6: Calculate CRSC Award Amount

Finally, obtain your CRSC award amount by subtracting your VA disability offset from the CRSC award calculation entitlement. This figure represents your monthly CRSC payment.

Conclusion

Understanding how CRSC is calculated allows eligible retired military personnel to estimate their potential compensation. While the process may seem daunting, breaking it down into steps makes it manageable. Remember, if you believe you are eligible for CRSC but have not yet
applied, it’s essential to contact your branch of service and submit an application to receive this
valuable benefit.
