Introduction

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used measure to assess an individual’s body weight in relation to their height. It is a simple and convenient method that helps provide an indication of whether someone is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. In this article, we will guide you on how to calculate your BMI in pounds.

Step-by-Step Guide to Calculate BMI in Pounds

Follow these steps for calculating your BMI using your height in inches and weight in pounds:

1. Obtain your height in inches and weight in pounds

First, accurately measure your height using a tape measure or ruler while standing barefoot against a wall with a straight posture. Record your height in inches.

Next, weigh yourself using an accurate and calibrated scale, preferably in the morning after using the restroom. Weigh yourself without shoes and minimal clothing and record the weight.

2. Square your height

Multiply your height by itself, which means multiplying the total number of inches by the same total number of inches (e.g. if you are 5’6″, you would multiply 66″ * 66″).

3. Divide your weight by the result of step 2

Take your weight in pounds and divide it by the squared height value obtained from step 2. The result will be a decimal number with several digits behind the decimal point.

4. Multiply by 703

To convert to the standard BMI value, multiply the quotient obtained from step 3 by the conversion factor 703. Now, you have calculated your BMI in pounds.

Example

Let’s consider an example where an individual has a height of 5’6″ (66 inches) and weighs 150 pounds.

1. Height: 66 inches; Weight: 150 pounds

2. Square your height: 66 * 66 = 4356

3. Divide your weight by the result of step 2: 150 / 4356 = 0.0344

4. Multiply by 703: 0.0344 * 703 = 24.16

So, this individual’s BMI is 24.16.

BMI Interpretation

The resulting BMI value can be interpreted as follows:

– Underweight: BMI less than 18.5

– Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9

– Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9

– Obesity: BMI of 30 or greater

Conclusion

Calculating your BMI in pounds is a straightforward method to assess your weight status in relation to your height, giving you valuable insight into your overall health. However, always remember that BMI is just one indicator of an individual’s health and should not be relied upon entirely for a comprehensive understanding of one’s health status. Other factors such as muscle mass, age, and genetics should also be taken into consideration while evaluating overall well-being.
