If you’re planning a home renovation project or just looking to freshen up the exterior of your home, calculating how much siding you’ll need is an essential first step. Properly estimating the amount of siding necessary will save you time, money and ensure that you don’t run out of materials in the middle of your project. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of calculating how much siding you’ll need for your home.

1. Measure Your Home’s Exterior Dimensions

Before beginning the calculations, grab a tape measure and take accurate measurements of all your exterior walls. Note down these dimensions, such as length and height of each wall, as well as any irregularly-shaped sections or unique features like dormers. Be specific in your measurements – this will help immensely when it comes time to purchase your siding materials!

2. Calculate Wall Area

For each wall, multiply its length by its height to determine the wall area. Write down this value for each wall and then add together all the individual wall calculations to find the total exterior area.
Example: If one exterior wall is 30 feet long and 10 feet high, it would have an area of 300 square feet (30 x 10 = 300).

3. Account for Windows and Doors

You won’t be installing siding over doors and windows, so it’s important to account for these when estimating material needs. Measure the width and height of each door and window in your home’s exterior, then multiply those values together. Add up all these individual window and door measurements, then subtract this combined value from the total exterior area calculated in step 2.

4. Determine Siding Coverage Rates

The coverage rate for siding materials varies depending on the type of siding you plan to use. Ensure that you have all information about your chosen material handy since coverage rates will be crucial when it comes down to calculations. Check with your supplier or manufacturer to confirm the coverage rate for the specific siding you’re using.

5. Calculate Total Siding Needed

Now, with your modified exterior area and specific siding coverage rate, it’s time to calculate how much siding you’ll need. Divide your modified exterior area by the coverage rate per unit of your chosen siding material. This will give you the total number of units required to cover your entire home. Always round up to the nearest full unit and consider purchasing a few extra units to account for any errors or damage during installation.

Example: If your adjusted exterior area is 2,000 sq ft and the coverage rate of your siding material is 100 sq ft per unit, you would need 20 units (2,000 ÷ 100 = 20) of siding for your entire home.

By following these steps and taking accurate measurements, you can successfully calculate how much siding you need for a successful home renovation project with minimal waste and cost. Happy renovating!
