In various aspects of our lives, percentages come into play, be it in calculating discounts, the percentage of tasks completed, or scores achieved in an examination. Learning how to calculate a percentage of a number can be incredibly useful. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you compute percentages with ease.

1. Convert the percentage to a decimal.

To convert the given percentage into a decimal, divide the percentage by 100. Alternatively, you can also move the decimal point two places to the left.

Example: If you want to calculate 20% of a number, you would divide 20 by 100 or move the decimal point two places to the left, resulting in 0.20 as the equivalent decimal.

2. Multiply the converted decimal with the original number.

Now that you have the equivalent decimal for your percentage, you are ready to compute the percentage of your given number. To do this, simply multiply the decimal by that number.

Example: If you want to find 20% of 50, multiply 0.20 (converted decimal) by 50.

0.20 x 50 = 10

So, 20% of 50 equals 10.

3. Check and interpret your answer.

After completing your calculations, ensure that your answer is correct and interpret it within your specific context. In our previous example, we found that 20% of the number 50 is equal to 10.

Additional Tips:

– For calculation purposes, always ensure that your original number and converted decimal are accurate.

– If you’re asked to find a certain percentage greater than or less than your original number (for instance, “What will my salary be if it increases by 5%?”), follow these steps: calculate the additional or reduced amount first and then add or subtract this amount from your original value.

– Practice various percentage calculations to become familiar with different scenarios.

In summary, calculating the percentage of a number is simple when you follow these steps: Convert the given percentage to a decimal, multiply the converted decimal with the original number, and finally, check and interpret your answer. With this guide, you should have no trouble calculating percentages in your everyday life!
