Holiday Travel: The Worst US Airlines for Delays and Cancellations

Introduction:

With the holiday season fast approaching, many people will be taking to the skies to visit friends and family. While air travel can be a convenient and efficient way to cover long distances, it’s not without its drawbacks – among them, delays and cancellations. In this article, we’ll examine some of the worst US airlines when it comes to delays and cancellations, helping you make more informed decisions about which airline to book with this holiday season.

1. American Airlines:

According to Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) data, American Airlines consistently ranks poorly in terms of on-time performance. In fact, during the 2021 holiday season, nearly 20% of all American Airlines flights experienced delays. Additionally, the airline has been known to face issues with staff shortages and maintenance problems, both of which can contribute to further flight disruptions.

2. JetBlue Airways:

Another airline that struggles with punctuality is JetBlue Airways. As per BTS statistics, around 26% of JetBlue’s flights were delayed in 2021. Unlike other airlines that mainly face issues because of staffing and maintenance problems, JetBlue often cites weather-related disturbances as the primary reason for their delays.

3. Frontier Airlines:

Low-cost airline Frontier is no stranger to interruptions in service. Nearly 30% of their flights experienced delays in 2021. While some of these can be attributed to unavoidable factors like weather events, many customers have complained about the airline’s poor customer service and unwillingness to offer compensation or accommodations in cases of severe disruptions.

4. United Airlines:

United Airlines has faced its share of bad press over the years for a variety of reasons, one of which being their on-time performance rate. The BTS reports that close to 22% of United’s flights operated with delays in 2021. Furthermore, they also tend to have a higher rate of cancellations compared to other major airlines, making them a less reliable choice for holiday travelers.

5. Spirit Airlines:

Though Spirit Airlines offers attractively low fares, their punctuality record leaves much to be
desired. The low-cost carrier saw approximately 25% of its flights delayed during the 2021 holiday season, while cancellations were also more frequent than with other airlines. For potential passengers who prioritize arriving on time, booking with Spirit Airlines may not be the best option.

Conclusion:

While no airline can guarantee a delay-free experience, it’s important to consider an airline’s historical performance when booking your holiday travel. By being aware of the worst airlines for delays and cancellations, you can make an informed decision and plan your trip accordingly, minimizing the chances of disruptions that could potentially ruin your holiday plans. Remember that other factors like price, customer service, and in-flight amenities should also be considered before choosing the airline that best meets your needs.
