Here’s How to Claim Your Piece of the $245M Fortnite Settlement

Epic Games, the developer behind the immensely popular game Fortnite, has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit by paying out $245 million to its users. This lawsuit stemmed from allegations regarding the company’s use of loot boxes, which were claimed to be predatory and in violation of consumer protection laws.

If you’re one of the many who’ve played Fortnite and engaged with its in-game purchases, then you might be eligible for a piece of this settlement. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how you can claim your share:

1. Check Eligibility: The first step is to determine if you are eligible. The settlement is meant for U.S. players who bought random-item “Loot Llamas” in Fortnite’s Save the World game mode before their discontinuation.

2. Look for Communication from Epic Games: Eligible players are likely to receive direct communication from Epic Games via email, provided they have previously opted-in for such notifications or have made in-game purchases that qualify.

3. Visit the Official Settlement Website: A dedicated website has been created where you can submit a claim. Bookmark this site and visit it regularly for updates regarding claim submission deadlines and detailed instructions.

4. Gather Your Proof of Purchase: If you’re filing a claim, it’s always a good idea to have your proof of purchase ready. Although Epic has transaction histories, keeping your own records can expedite the process.

5. Fill Out the Claim Form: Once the claim forms are available, fill them out with all the requested information accurately. You might need your Epic Games account information and relevant transaction details.

6. Wait for Verification: After submitting your form, there will be a period wherein your claim is verified against Epic Games’s records.

7. Receive Compensation: Once your claim has been verified and approved, the form of your compensation will be decided—this could be cash or credit for in-game perks based on how much you spent on Loot Llamas.

8. Legal Review and Approval: Keep in mind that all claims are subject to review by the court overseeing the settlement. The approval process may affect timelines for distribution.

9. Stay Informed: Timelines for settling class-action lawsuits can stretch over months or even years sometimes. Stay informed by checking back on the official settlement website or subscribing to updates.

10. Seek Legal Advice if Needed: If there are aspects of the claims process you do not understand, it may be beneficial to seek professional legal advice.

It’s important to note that these settlements often have very specific terms and conditions and not everyone will receive significant sums of money; some might only get small payouts or in-game benefits.

The Fortnite settlement is seen as a win for consumer rights advocates and sets a precedent within the gaming industry regarding fair practices with loot boxes and microtransactions. Claiming your share is not just about receiving compensation, but also about acknowledging your rights as a consumer in the digital gaming space.

Keep an eye on deadlines and ensure your voice is heard by timely action if you believe you’re entitled to this piece of the Fortnite pie!
