Introduction

The Google Nest Doorbell 1st Gen (Wired) is one of the first smart video doorbells introduced by Google. Launched several years ago, this device gained popularity due to its practical features and compatibility with the Google ecosystem. In this review, we will discuss its features, performance, and how it stands in the current smart doorbell market.

Features

The Google Nest Doorbell 1st Gen (Wired) is equipped with a 3-megapixel camera and offers a 160° field of view and HD video quality. It has an 850 nm infrared LED for night vision, allowing clear images even in low-light conditions. The device is also weather-resistant, which ensures functionality under varying climate conditions.

The Nest Doorbell provides real-time notifications sent directly to your smartphone or connected device when someone is at your door. Additionally, it offers two-way audio communication that allows you to converse with your visitors remotely. With its robust facial recognition feature, the doorbell can recognize familiar faces and inform you specifically who has come to your doorstep.

Integration with Google Home makes it easy for users to control the Nest Doorbell using voice commands or view live streaming on compatible devices, such as the Google Nest Hub. The device also stores video footage on the cloud for up to 30 days when subscribed to a Nest Aware plan.

Performance

Installation of the Google Nest Doorbell 1st Gen (Wired) is relatively straightforward; however, it requires an existing wiring set-up with a voltage range of 16-24 VAC. Once installed and connected to the internet, you can configure it using the Google Home app. The device delivers clear video imagery and accurate motion-detection alerts.
The facial recognition feature works as intended; however, occasional false positives may occur in specific lighting conditions. The two-way audio communication remains clear and hassle-free, making it convenient for homeowners to communicate with visitors without opening the door.

The Google Assistant integration makes for seamless interactions with Nest Doorbell through voice commands. However, keep in mind that this compatibility is primarily limited to the Google ecosystem, which should be considered by people invested in devices not compatible with Google Home.

A Smart but Dated Video Doorbell

Though the Nest Doorbell 1st Gen (Wired) has impressive features and delivers excellent performance, its age becomes evident when compared to the newest smart doorbells in the market. In today’s scenario, there are several other options with better video quality and subscription-free cloud recording. Moreover, while its wired set-up provides stability, many users might prefer battery-powered solutions for easier installations.

Conclusion

The Google Nest Doorbell 1st Gen (Wired) is an efficient and reliable smart video doorbell. However, it may not be the best choice for users seeking the latest features or wire-free installations. If you’re already part of the Google ecosystem and can find a good deal on the Nest Doorbell, it’s worth considering. But for those solely seeking advanced features, it would be wise to explore more recent offerings in the market.
