Understanding Gen Z’s Financial Priorities

Recent research conducted by Cashback Loans reveals significant differences in financial decision-making among Gen Z Americans compared to older generations. The study surveyed 3,000 U.S. adults and found that when faced with financial constraints, Gen Z individuals are more likely to cancel subscriptions rather than cut back on essential groceries.

Key Findings from the Survey

The survey highlights the following financial sacrifices made by Gen Z Americans (ages 18-24) over the past year:

  • Canceled subscriptions, such as Netflix: 37%
  • Cut back on groceries: 32%
  • Skipped social plans with friends: 27%
  • Used savings to cover everyday expenses: 22%
  • Taken a second job or side hustle: 22%
  • Missed or delayed paying a bill: 19%
  • Avoided attending events, such as weddings: 19%
  • Sold personal possessions: 19%
  • Moved in with family or friends to save rent: 16%
  • Delayed medical or dental care: 14%
  • Reduced childcare costs: 10%
  • Reduced retirement contributions: 7%

Comparative Analysis with National Trends

When comparing Gen Z’s financial sacrifices to the national averages, several trends emerge:

  • While 42% of Americans overall have cut back on groceries, only 32% of Gen Z respondents reported doing the same.
  • Gen Z is six percentage points more likely to cancel subscriptions than the national average (37% vs. 31%).
  • More than one in five (22%) Gen Z individuals have taken on a second job or side hustle, compared to 16% of the overall population.
  • Gen Z is less likely to delay healthcare, with 14% postponing medical or dental care compared to 21% nationally.

Implications for Businesses

These findings suggest that businesses targeting younger consumers may need to adjust their strategies. As Gen Z prioritizes subscription services and lifestyle changes over traditional spending, companies should consider how to cater to these preferences. Understanding the financial habits of this generation can help businesses better align their offerings and marketing strategies.

Conclusion

As Gen Z navigates financial pressures, their unique approach to spending and saving reflects a broader shift in consumer behavior. By recognizing these trends, businesses can position themselves to meet the evolving needs of this influential demographic.
