In a world dominated by crossovers and unibody SUVs, it’s easy to assume that the traditional, body-on-frame truck-based SUV is becoming a thing of the past. However, there are still several of these rugged vehicles on the market that offer durability, performance, and capability unmatched by their crossover counterparts. In this article, we’ll explore every truck-based SUV still sold today.

1. Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban

The Chevrolet Tahoe and its extended counterpart, the Suburban, continue to be popular options for those looking for a full-size truck-based SUV. They share underpinnings with the Silverado pickup truck and offer seating for up to nine passengers. These American legends deliver impressive towing capabilities and generous cargo space.

2. Ford Expedition

The Ford Expedition shares its platform with the highly popular Ford F-150 pickup truck. The large SUV has plenty of room for passengers and cargo and is equipped with modern technology. Its powerful engine and solid construction make it an excellent choice for those in need of a capable and spacious truck-based SUV.

3. GMC Yukon/Yukon XL

The GMC Yukon siblings are closely related to the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban duo but offer a more premium experience. They boast similar capabilities as their Chevy cousins but come with more upscale interior options.null

4. Jeep Wrangler

A staple in off-roading circles, the Jeep Wrangler is perhaps one of the most iconic truck-based SUVs on the market today. With roots dating back to World War II, this rugged vehicle has evolved into a modern and capable marvel while maintaining its legendary status.

5. Lexus GX

One of the few luxury offerings in this segment, the Lexus GX delivers both luxury appointments and legendary Toyota-bred off-road capabilities. Based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (not available in North America), this SUV comes equipped with plenty of features that keep its occupants comfortable while tackling tough terrain.

6. Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the G-Wagen, is a luxurious and highly capable truck-based SUV that has been in production since 1979. Its boxy design and unmatched off-road prowess contribute to its timeless appeal for people looking for an imposing yet comfortable presence on the road and trails.

7. Nissan Armada

Sharing its platform with the Infiniti QX80 and the Nissan Patrol (not available in North America), the Nissan Armada offers full-size SUV credentials with seating for eight passengers. This vehicle features a powerful V8 engine and all the creature comforts expected from an SUV in its class while maintaining solid off-road capability when needed.

8. Toyota 4Runner

The Toyota 4Runner remains one of the last mid-size truck-based SUVs still on sale today. Its rugged appearance and body-on-frame construction make it stand out among a sea of crossovers. The 4Runner’s popularity is partially due to its unparalleled reliability and impressive off-road credentials.

9. Toyota Land Cruiser

The legendary Toyota Land Cruiser offers buyers a luxurious and highly capable truck-based SUV that has been around for decades. Increasingly rare on American roads, this iconic vehicle is perfect for those looking for a premium experience combined with exceptional off-road performance.

These are all the truck-based SUVs still sold today, offering unique capabilities that can’t be matched by their crossover counterparts. Whether you’re after luxury, off-road prowess, or classic durability, these vehicles have something to offer anyone searching for a rugged and versatile mode of transportation.
