Does An Insurance Quote Affect Your Credit Score?

Introduction

When looking for an insurance policy, one of the considerations you’ll need to address is whether getting an insurance quote will impact your credit score. There’s a belief that an inquiry from an insurance company can lead to a hard pull on your credit, affecting your credit rating. In this article, we will explore how insurance quotes may affect your credit score and discuss other relevant factors that come into play.

Soft Inquiries vs Hard Inquiries

To understand the impact of insurance quotes on your credit score, it is crucial to differentiate between soft inquiries and hard inquiries. Soft inquiries are when a business checks your credit as part of a background check, pre-approval, or quote. Soft inquiries do not impact your credit score and are only visible to you on your credit report.

Hard inquiries, on the other hand, occur when you apply for a new line of credit or a loan. These types of inquiries do affect your credit score and remain visible on your report for two years. Generally, hard inquiries can cause a minor temporary drop in your overall credit score.

Insurance Quotes and Your Credit Score

Insurance companies use credit-based insurance scores to assess the risk associated with insuring potential clients. A good credit-based insurance score helps in obtaining lower premiums and better coverage options. However, when an insurer looks at your credit during the quotation process, they only perform a soft inquiry.

As mentioned earlier, because soft inquiries don’t affect your credit score, obtaining an insurance quote will not impact it either. It’s important to note that even shopping around and collecting multiple quotes from various insurance providers should have no negative consequences on your credit score.

Ensure Accurate Information

Although insurance quotes don’t negatively affect your credit score, it’s essential to provide accurate information during the quotation process. Providing false or misleading data could potentially lead to discrepancies when it comes time for coverage details on the eventual policy. Always double-check your details to ensure a smooth and accurate insurance experience.

Conclusion

In summary, getting an insurance quote does not affect your credit score since it’s considered a soft inquiry. You can freely shop around and gather quotes from multiple providers without having to worry about any harm to your credit rating. Always provide the correct information to the insurance companies while getting a quote to make sure the entire process runs seamlessly.
