Bridging the Workforce Gap: The Role of Visibility in Skilled Trades

The skilled trades sector is at a pivotal moment, with a significant workforce already in place yet facing challenges in job matching and visibility. As initiatives like Lowe’s $250 million “Building Futures” coalition aim to train a million people in the trades by 2035, it is essential to recognize the existing workforce and the barriers they face in finding employment.

The Current State of the Skilled Trades Workforce

According to recent data, construction employment stands at approximately 8.3 million, with wages increasing by 5.2% annually, even as other sectors of the labor market show signs of cooling. However, a troubling statistic from the 2026 AGC/NCCER workforce survey reveals that half of all contractors report difficulties in filling open hourly craft roles. This indicates that the issue is not a lack of workers but rather a lack of visibility and mobility in matching available talent with job opportunities.

Challenges in Job Matching

Fraser Patterson, founder and CEO of Skillit, highlights that while initiatives like Lowe’s focus on training future workers, the immediate challenge lies in connecting the existing workforce with current job openings. Skillit, an AI hiring platform utilized by major companies such as DPR, Mortenson, and Swinerton, aims to address this visibility gap by streamlining the hiring process and ensuring that skilled workers can be matched with available positions.

Addressing the Visibility Gap

  • Current Workforce: The 8.3 million skilled trades workers are ready and available.
  • Training Initiatives: Programs like Lowe’s coalition are essential for future workforce development but do not address the immediate needs.
  • Visibility Solutions: Platforms like Skillit are crucial for improving job matching and mobility for existing workers.

As the skilled trades sector continues to evolve, it is imperative to bridge the gap between available workers and job opportunities. By enhancing visibility and mobility, we can ensure that the existing workforce is effectively matched with the jobs that need them today, while simultaneously investing in the training of future generations.
