Queen, the legendary rock band that has mesmerized audiences for decades, owes much of its success to its dynamic frontman Freddie Mercury and the virtuosic guitar work of Brian May. As the band’s guitarist and one of the primary songwriters, May’s contributions have been pivotal in shaping Queen’s distinctive sound. His thoughts on the band’s best songs are not just opinions but insights into the heart of Queen’s music.

One of May’s favorites is “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a masterpiece that merged rock and opera in unprecedented ways. May respects the song for its complexity and emotional depth, blending powerful guitar riffs with a captivating vocal performance by Mercury. This six-minute suite, written by Mercury, isn’t just a highlight in Queen’s discography; it’s an enduring piece of musical history that continues to influence artists across genres.

Another track that holds a special place in May’s heart is “The Show Must Go On.” Recorded during Freddie Mercury’s final days, this song showcases the band’s resilience and commitment to their art. May’s guitar breaks are poignant and powerful, serving as a testament to his ability to convey emotion through his instrument. The song encapsulates the spirit of perseverance in the face of adversity.

“We Will Rock You” is known for its stomp-stomp-clap beat that has reverberated through stadiums around the world. For Brian May, this song is more than an anthem; it’s an interactive experience with the audience. He often refers to it as a stroke of genius for its simplicity and universal appeal.

Then there’s “Love of My Life,” a heartfelt ballad that May holds dear. Performed live with Freddie at the piano, this song allows May’s tender side to emerge both lyrically and melodically. It reminds him not only of Queen’s versatility but also of their connection with fans who would join in singing this emotional piece during concerts.

Brian May regards “I Want It All” as one that speaks volumes about Queen’s philosophy toward life and music: a constant strive for excellence and seizing opportunities. Its driving riff and motivational lyrics echo Queen’s ambition and have inspired countless fans to pursue their dreams with the same fervor.

May also acknowledges lesser-known tracks like “’39,” from the “A Night at the Opera” album, which he penned and sang lead vocals on. The folk-inspired tune reveals another facet of his musicianship as it blends a sci-fi narrative with acoustic elements.

Brian May candidly appreciates all these songs not just for their melodic and technical brilliance but for the memories they carry. Each track is a page out of Queen’s storybook, filled with moments of innovation, brotherhood, triumph, and sometimes tragedy. These brutally honest thoughts from Brian May offer a peek into how these timeless songs are woven into the very fabric of what made Queen legendary.
