BoraCare vs. Timbor: Which is Best? – The Craftsman Blog

When deciding between BoraCare and Timbor for wood treatment, it’s essential to understand their differences and the specific uses they are designed for. Both products are used to prevent and treat wood against fungal decay and wood-destroying insects like termites, beetles, and carpenter ants, but their formulations and applications vary significantly.

BoraCare is a glycol-based solution containing disodium octaborate tetrahydrate. It’s a liquid product that penetrates deep into wood, providing long-lasting protection because it doesn’t break down over time. BoraCare also remains active in wood long after it has dried, which can help prevent future infestations. This makes it a good choice for pre-treatments in new construction or when treating infestations in existing structures where you want the treatment to last for many years.

On the other hand, Timbor is a water-soluble borate powder that also utilizes disodium octaborate tetrahydrate as its active ingredient. Although less expensive than BoraCare, Timbor’s penetration into wood is not as deep since it primarily remains on the surface and in the outer layers. This characteristic makes Timbor an excellent choice for preventative surface treatments but possibly less effective for treating established infestations deep within wood.

In terms of application, BoraCare requires more preparation because it needs to be mixed with water at the job site and typically requires professional application equipment. It is also a more versatile product, being able to mix with paint or stains, or applied on its own. Timbor is easier to apply since you can dissolve it in water and use a simple garden sprayer.

Cost-wise, Timbor usually presents itself as the more economical option up-front. However, considering BoraCare’s deeper penetration and longer-lasting protection, the cost over time might actually favor BoraCare as the more cost-effective solution due to potentially reduced need for reapplication.

Ultimately, choosing between BoraCare and Timbor comes down to your specific situation. For deeper infestations requiring long-term protection, BoraCare might be the best bet. If you’re looking for a preventative measure that’s easier on the budget and simple to apply yourself, Timbor could be more suitable. Always consider consulting with pest management professionals before making your decision.

Remember that whichever product you choose, proper preparation of the wood surface is crucial for effective treatment. Make sure any dirt, debris, or finishes are properly removed to allow the chosen borate treatment to adequately penetrate and protect the wood.
