Best TV Shows About Ancient Rome

When it comes to historical drama, Ancient Rome has long been a source of fascination for filmmakers and television producers. The era’s tales of political intrigue, military might, and complex society offer a rich tapestry from which some of the most engaging series have been woven. This article takes a closer look at the best TV shows that transport viewers back to the times of gladiators, senators, and emperors.

1. Rome (2005-2007)

A remarkable co-production between HBO and the BBC, “Rome” is often credited with reinvigorating interest in ancient Roman history on TV. It spanned two gripping seasons that focused on the transition from Republic to Empire, with Julius Caesar’s rise and fall taking center stage. The show won acclaim for its lavish production values, strong performances, and a gritty portrayal of Roman life.

2. Spartacus (2010-2013)

This series from Starz went down in history for its stylized combat sequences and explicit content. “Spartacus” tells the story of the titular Thracian gladiator who led a slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Its graphical approach brought a visceral realism to television that had been unparalleled in shows set in this era.

3. I, Claudius (1976)

Despite its age, “I, Claudius” remains one of the benchmarks for Roman historical dramas. The series brought life to the pages of Robert Graves’ novels about Emperor Claudius and provides an intimate look at the internal workings of the imperial family. With standout performances and a focus on character rather than spectacle, it’s often cited for its writing and acting.

4. Imperium: Augustus (2003)

This miniseries based on the life of Rome’s first emperor, Augustus Caesar, features impressive performances by Peter O’Toole as Augustus and Charlotte Rampling as Livia Drusilla. Though it strays occasionally from historical accuracy for dramatic effect, it still presents a fascinating study of one man’s consolidation of power in ancient Rome.

5. Domina (2021-)

Sky Atlantic’s “Domina” gives viewers a fresh perspective by focusing on women’s power in Ancient Rome through the eyes of Livia Drusilla. She rises through Rome’s patriarchy to become one of the most powerful empresses in Roman history—a unique angle not often explored in television about this period.

These shows offer diverse approaches to depicting Ancient Rome but share an ability to captivate modern audiences with tales as old as time itself—proving that good storytelling is truly timeless. Whether you’re looking for epic battles or intricate dramas woven through historical events, these series will undoubtedly fill your need for high-stakes entertainment set against one of history’s most enthralling backdrops: Ancient Rome.
