Text-to-speech (TTS) apps are a boon for Android users with visual impairments, reading difficulties, or disabilities that limit their ability to read text. While there are tons of TTS apps available on the Play Store, not all of them are user-friendly or feature-rich. If you are looking for the best TTS apps for your Android device, this article is for you.

1. Google Assistant

Google Assistant is a built-in TTS assistant that comes with every Android device. It can read out text messages, emails, web pages, and even books aloud. You can activate Google Assistant by saying “OK Google” or by pressing and holding the home button. Once it is activated, simply say “Read aloud” followed by the name of the app or website you want to hear. Google Assistant also allows you to adjust the speed and volume of the audio.

2. Voice Aloud Reader

Voice Aloud Reader is a highly rated TTS app that can read out loud any text on your device, including PDFs, EPUBs, and Word documents. Moreover, you can also import text from other apps or websites and listen to it using Voice Aloud Reader. Additionally, the app comes with a variety of voice options, including natural-sounding voices that can make the text sound more realistic. You can also adjust the speed, pitch, and volume of the audio.

3. Pocket

Pocket is a popular app that lets you save articles, videos, and web pages to read later. The app also comes with a built-in text-to-speech feature that allows you to listen to the saved content while you are on the go. To use the TTS feature in Pocket, simply open the article or web page and tap on the three-dots button at the top of the screen. Then select “Listen (TTS)” from the options. You can also adjust the speed and voice of the audio.

4. ReadAloud

ReadAloud is another TTS app that can read any text out loud, including books, documents, and web pages. Besides, the app also comes with a built-in OCR scanner that can recognize and read text from images. The app has a simple interface, and you can adjust the speed, pitch, and voice of the audio. Moreover, you can also save the audio files for future listening.

5. Speechify

Speechify is a TTS app that is designed for people with reading difficulties or disabilities. The app can convert any text into natural-sounding speech and also highlights the text as it reads it out loud. Additionally, the app can also translate text into different languages and read out the translations. Speechify also has integration with other apps, such as Pocket and Instapaper, that allows you to listen to saved content through the app.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
