Best Temperature To Have Heating At And Common Mistakes That Waste Energy

Maintaining a comfortable and energy-efficient home during the colder months can greatly depend on finding the right temperature for your heating system. While personal preferences can vary, energy experts often recommend setting your thermostat to around 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) while you’re awake and at home. This temperature is considered a practical balance between comfort and energy conservation.

However, many homeowners make common mistakes that lead to unnecessary energy waste. Here are a few pitfalls to avoid:

1. Overheating During the Night: It’s advisable to lower the heating when you’re asleep, as the need for warmth decreases and blankets often suffice. Reducing your thermostat by 7-10 degrees Fahrenheit for an 8-hour period during the night can save up to 10% a year on heating.

2. Neglecting Programmable Thermostats: A programmable thermostat can make temperature management effortless. By setting it to automatically lower the heat when you’re away or asleep, you eliminate the risk of forgetting to adjust it manually.

3. Ignoring Maintenance: Regular maintenance of your heating system ensures it runs efficiently. Replace filters as needed, generally every 1-3 months, and schedule annual check-ups with a professional to prevent energy loss.

4. Allowing Heat Escape: Poor insulation and gaps in windows or doors can let out heat. Weatherstripping or using thermal curtains are simple solutions that help retain warmth.

5. Heating Unused Rooms: Close off vents or radiators in rooms not in use so that you’re not wasting heat in an empty space.

By understanding the best temperature to set your heating at and being aware of common mistakes, you can keep your home cozy without excess energy consumption.
