Best Portuguese wines to try in 2024

Portuguese wines have long been appreciated for their unique qualities and diversity. As we look towards 2024, there are several notable wines from Portugal that enthusiasts and newcomers alike should not miss. This article will guide you through some of the best Portuguese wines to try in the upcoming year, each distinctive for its regional characteristics and taste profile.

1. Vinho Verde from Minho: This ‘green wine’, typically light and fresh, is a perfect introduction to Portuguese whites. Try the Alvarinho variety for its vibrant citrus flavors and subtle effervescence. Ideal for a summer afternoon, Vinho Verde is best enjoyed young.

2. Douro Reds: The Douro Valley, famous for its terraced vineyards along the river, produces some of Portugal’s most robust reds. The 2024 vintages to seek out are blends featuring Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz varietals. These wines are known for their intense dark fruit flavors and hints of spice and oak from barrel aging.

3. Dão Reds: Offering a more elegant and less tannic profile than Douro wines, Dão reds are made predominantly from Touriga Nacional grape but blended with others like Tinta Roriz and Alfrocheiro. The 2024 releases promise complex aromatics with balanced acidity.

4. Alentejo Reds: The sun-drenched region of Alentejo is responsible for producing full-bodied reds with a high degree of ripeness. Alicante Bouschet is a standout grape here, offering wines that have rich berry flavors with chocolate notes – prime candidates for 2024’s must-try list.

5. Madeira: Those with a taste for fortified wines should not overlook Madeira, which has been produced since the age of exploration. In 2024, seek out the medium-rich styles like Boal or Malmsey (Malvasia) for their deep caramelized fruit flavors coupled with nutty overtones.

6. Port Wine: No list of Portuguese wines would be complete without Port. While vintage Ports get most of the attention – consider seeking out LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) Ports from 2018 or earlier that will be exceptional in 2024 after proper cellaring – they offer complexity akin to vintage port without the same level of investment.

7. Bairrada Sparkling Wines: You should also discover the sparkling wines from Bairrada made using the traditional method (the same method used in Champagne). These sparkling treasures often blend Bical, Maria Gomes, and Arinto grapes to achieve incredible finesse and vibrant minerality.

In conclusion, across these seven recommendations lies an inviting panorama of Portuguese viticulture as we advance into 2024. Each wine region contributes uniquely to Portugal’s enological tapestry – from refreshing Vinho Verdes to sumptuous Ports – providing both connoisseurs and those new to wine an exceptional tasting journey through one of the world’s lesser-known yet truly remarkable wine-producing countries.
