Best Michigan football conference destinations if they leave Big Ten

Should the Michigan Wolverines ever decide to leave the Big Ten, speculation surrounding their new conference home would ignite a firestorm of debate and inquiry among college sports enthusiasts. Imagining a shift in allegiance, let’s explore some of the best potential football conference destinations for this storied program.

Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)

Welcoming in Michigan would be a win-win for both parties. The Wolverines would benefit from competing against high-caliber teams such as Clemson and Florida State, promising riveting matchups. Geographically contiguous with current ACC members, Michigan’s entry could also spark fresh rivalries and maintain traditional ones with existing Big Ten opponents who play ACC teams during non-conference games.

Southeastern Conference (SEC)

Entering the SEC, colloquially known as the nation’s premier college football conference, would instantly boost Michigan’s schedule strength. With historical powerhouses like Alabama, LSU, and Georgia on the schedule, Michigan would be tested week in week out, potentially increasing their appeal to recruits looking to compete at the highest level.

Pac-12

By joining the Pac-12, Michigan could extend its brand to the West Coast, offering an attractive proposition for the conference looking to gain more national exposure. While it may create travel challenges, this move could be beneficial for recruiting pipelines while granting Michigan access to media markets in Los Angeles and the Pacific Northwest.

Big 12

The Big 12 has been in a state of flux but acquiring a program like Michigan could stabilize and elevate the conference’s profile. This association could greatly benefit from Michigan’s vast fan base and traditions, creating new dynamics in scheduling and viewership.

American Athletic Conference (AAC)

Considering a move that might at first seem unconventional, joining the AAC could allow Michigan to dominate a conference that’s on its way up in prestige. While it’s an outlier choice compared to traditional Power Five considerations, it may help the Wolverines establish consistent dominance both regionally and nationally.

Michigan’s move would have widespread implications beyond football—altering conference TV revenue deals, affecting NCAA tournament bids in multiple sports, and reshaping collegiate athletic dynamics across divisions. However speculative this scenario is, it represents a seismic shift in collegiate sports should it ever come to pass.
