Best BIOS Settings for Windows 10

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is a crucial component of any PC that takes charge right when you boot up your computer. It is the gateway that allows software to communicate with the hardware of your system. Optimizing BIOS settings can enhance system stability, performance, and possibly give you a speed edge over default settings. Here we’ll dive into the best BIOS settings for Windows 10 to ensure a smooth and efficient computing experience.

Enable Quick Boot

This is one of the first options you might want to enable for a faster startup. The Quick Boot feature skips some of the traditional memory tests and checks your PC goes through every time it starts.

Set Boot Order

Make sure your hard drive, where Windows 10 is installed, is set as the primary boot device. This will reduce boot times by avoiding unnecessary checks for other boot devices like USB drives or DVDs.

Activate Windows 10 WHQL Support

Modern BIOS interfaces often have an option for Windows 8/10 mode or a setting for ‘Windows 10 WHQL Support.’ Enabling this feature can improve compatibility with Windows 10 and ensure that other functions, like Secure Boot, work correctly.

Enable XMP Profile (If Applicable)

If you have installed high-performance RAM in your PC, enabling the Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) will ensure that your RAM operates at its advertised speeds. This can significantly affect system performance and stability.

Adjust Power Settings

Adjust power settings to favor performance if you don’t mind consuming slightly more electricity. Look for ‘Performance’ instead of ‘Power Saving’ options in CPU Power Management Settings.

Disable Unused Ports

There’s no need to keep certain onboard device controllers enabled if you aren’t using them. Disabling unused ports like Serial Ports or onboard audio (if you’re using a dedicated card), helps in streamlining the BIOS processes and reducing potential conflicts.

Update Your BIOS Regularly

Manufacturers release BIOS updates to address bugs, compatibility issues, and implement improvements. Updating may provide added functionalities or performance benefits that optimize Windows 10’s performance on your hardware.

Ensure UEFI Mode is Enabled

For newer systems, UEFI mode offers better security and faster boot times compared to Legacy mode. It is recommended to enable UEFI mode if it’s supported by your motherboard.

Please note: Before adjusting BIOS settings, it’s always advisable to note down original values so that you can revert back if necessary. Also, tweaking advanced settings without proper knowledge can cause system instability, so be cautious especially when dealing with CPU voltages and timings.
