Spread the love

With crisp air, vibrant foliage, and the bustling city of Tokyo slowly embracing the calming tones of autumn, hikers and nature enthusiasts find this season perfect to explore the scenic trails around Japan’s capital. Nourish your love for nature and adventure by embarking on these recommended autumn hikes around Tokyo.

1. Mount Takao

Just an hour from central Tokyo, Mount Takao is a fan-favorite with its easily accessible trails and the stunning views it offers. In autumn, the mountain transforms into a palette of fiery reds, oranges, and yellows. Visitors can take the cable car halfway up and enjoy a leisurely hike to the summit or challenge themselves with one of the many hiking trails available.

2. Okutama

Okutama provides a nature-filled escapade at Tokyo’s western edge, with its lush valleys and mountainous terrain making for ideal hiking conditions in autumn. The hike around Lake Okutama, on a clear day, affords hikers spectacular views of Mount Fuji amid a sea of seasonal colors.

3. Mount Mitake

A part of the larger Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, Mount Mitake is another excellent location for witnessing fall foliage. The hike from Mitake station to the mountain’s summit lets you immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture as you pass by quaint villages and ancient shrines, all framed by the stunning autumnal canopy.

4. Oze National Park

Oze National Park is slightly further from Tokyo but well worth the travel during autumn when its marshlands blush with various shades of reds and golds. It’s home to some rare plant species and offers gentle walking paths that are suitable for all skill levels.

5. Mount Moiwa

Although not as well-known as other spots near Tokyo for autumn colors, Mount Moiwa offers a unique experience with night hikes that unveil Tokyo’s skyline against an amber-tinted backdrop. The view from its observation deck is particularly striking during dusk.

These hikes not only provide a welcome respite from the city’s hustle but also offer the chance to reconnect with nature in one of Japan’s most beautiful seasons. Whether you’re looking for a challenging trek or just a casual day outing amidst serene landscapes, Tokyo’s surroundings cater to every preference against that perfect canvas of fall hues.
