Identifying trees can be a difficult task, especially for those who are not familiar with their individual characteristics. However, thanks to the advancement in technology, identifying trees has become easier than ever before. Nowadays, there are plenty of apps available for smartphones that can identify trees quickly and accurately. If you’re an amateur botanist or just someone interested in the flora around you, here are some of the best apps for identifying trees.

PlantSnap

PlantSnap is a popular app that uses the power of artificial intelligence to identify trees quickly and easily. All you need to do is take a picture of the tree’s leaves, flowers, or fruits, and the app will show you a list of potential tree species matches. You can also browse through a database of over 600,000 plant species to learn more about them.

Tree ID

Tree ID is another great app that is available for both Android and iOS users. It is developed by the Arbor Day Foundation, which is known for its efforts to protect and celebrate trees worldwide. Tree ID allows you to identify any tree species by answering a series of simple questions. The app features a comprehensive tree database, including information on leaf shape, bark texture, and fruit type, making it easy to identify even the most obscure trees.

Leafsnap

Leafsnap is a unique app that focuses on identifying trees based on their leaves. Developed by the Smithsonian Institution, Leafsnap uses visual recognition software to identify tree species based on photographs of their leaves. The app features high-resolution images of leaves from over 190 tree species, making it one of the most comprehensive databases of its kind.

iNaturalist

iNaturalist is an app that allows users to identify not just trees but also other plants and animals in their natural habitats. The app uses artificial intelligence to identify species and provides a platform for nature enthusiasts to share observations and contribute to various research projects. All you need to do is snap a photo of the tree you want to identify and upload it to the app, and it will identify it for you, along with relevant information about the species.

TreeFinder

TreeFinder is an app that focuses on identification of North American trees. The app features a vast database of over 274 tree species, including detailed descriptions and photos of their leaves, bark, flowers, fruits, and seeds. TreeFinder also includes a search feature that allows you to filter trees based on their location, season, and other attributes.
