Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a wealth of character customization options, allowing players to create heroes that best fit their playstyle. Among these options, choosing the right combination of class and background can vastly enhance your character’s effectiveness and role-playing experience. Below are 10 of the best class and background pairings in Baldur’s Gate 3:

1. Wizard & Sage: This classic combination aligns arcane knowledge with a scholarly past. Wizards benefit from the Sage background which boosts their proficiency in History and Arcana, allowing them to unravel the mysteries of the Forgotten Realms with ease.

2. Rogue & Urchin: Street smarts meet stealth in this pairing. The Urchin background complements a Rogue’s skills by offering proficiency in Sleight of Hand and Stealth, as well as giving them unique insight into urban environments.

3. Cleric & Acolyte: A life devoted to the service of a deity makes the Acolyte an ideal choice for Clerics. This background provides additional insight into Religion, supporting a Cleric’s divine connections.

4. Fighter & Soldier: Battle-hardened warriors will find solidarity with the Soldier background, which not only adds to their martial prowess but also provides military rank that can command respect and authority among soldier NPCs.

5. Warlock & Charlatan: With deception at their fingertips, Warlocks can greatly benefit from the Charlatan background, aiding them in deceitful endeavors and enhancing their manipulative spells.

6. Barbarian & Outlander: Born in the wild and accustomed to survival in harsh conditions, Barbarians with the Outlander background have an innate ability to navigate terrain and live off the land.

7. Bard & Entertainer: Bards thrive on attention, making the Entertainer background a natural fit. This grants them proficiency in Performance and helps them captivate audiences whether on stage or during adventuring.

8. Ranger & Folk Hero: Rangers often protect the untamed frontiers and those who live there; thus, a Ranger with a Folk Hero background is revered by common folk and has inspiring tales of their own heroism to bolster comrades.

9. Paladin & Noble: Paladins carry a sense of authority that is well complemented by a Noble upbringing. The innate understanding of wealth and power can assist Paladins when dealing with aristocrats or government officials.

10. Sorcerer & Guild Artisan: Crafting magic like others craft goods, Sorcerers gain additional social leverage from the Guild Artisan background, which offers proficiency in Persuasion as well as useful contacts within trade guilds.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, matching your class with an appropriate background not only enhances your character mechanically but also deepens your role-playing options as you weave your tale within the rich tapestry that is the Dungeons and Dragons universe.
