Apple Watch Series 5 vs. Series 3: Apple’s older smartwatch models have a lot to offer

In a world where technology is constantly evolving, it can be challenging to determine which device suits your needs the best. Apple, one of the biggest players in tech, has released various smartwatches since the launch of its first Apple Watch in 2015. Two of these models that continue to impress are the Apple Watch Series 3 and Series 5. Let’s compare these older, yet still powerful, devices to help you decide which one is right for you.

Design and Display

At first glance, both the Series 3 and Series 5 share a similar overall design with their rounded rectangular watch faces and streamlined bands. The most significant difference in design between the two lies in their display sizes— the Series 3 is only available in 38mm and 42mm sizes, while the Series 5 comes in slightly larger options of 40mm and 44mm.

Moreover, the always-on display feature in the Series 5 is a significant advantage over its predecessor. This means that your watch face remains visible even when your wrist isn’t raised, making it easier to check time and notifications without any extra effort.

Performance and Battery Life

The performance gap between the two models is noticeable but not glaringly so. The Series 5 runs on Apple’s S5 chipset compared to the S3 chipset on the Series 3. This may result in slightly faster app load times and smoother navigation on the newer model.

Battery life, on the other hand, is pretty consistent across both devices— despite having an always-on display, the Series 5 promises up to18 hours of use, just like its older counterpart.

Health and Fitness Features

The Apple Watch excels at fitness tracking, making it a popular choice among health-conscious individuals. While both models offer essential features such as heart rate monitoring, activity tracking, and GPS capabilities, the Series 5 takes it up a notch with the inclusion of its ECG app and fall detection. The ECG app allows for a quick, single-lead electrocardiogram that could potentially detect irregular heart rhythms. Fall detection, on the other hand, alerts you or emergency contacts when it senses a fall.

Price

Cost-wise, the Apple Watch Series 3 is a clear winner; given its lower price tag and comparable features to the Series 5. For those on a tight budget or not needing advanced health-tracking options like ECG and fall detection, the Series 3 would make an excellent choice.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the decision between the Apple Watch Series 3 and Series 5 boils down to individual preferences and needs. While both models come with their respective pros and cons, they offer a solid foundation in design, performance, and usability. The Apple Watch Series 5 may be an attractive option for those seeking premium features like an always-on display and advanced health tracking capabilities. However, if you’re prioritizing cost over additional features that you might not even use regularly, the Series 3 remains a fantastic investment.
