Alienware has been at the forefront of the gaming laptop industry for years, and with the release of the m17 R5, they show no signs of slowing down. Boasting impressive performance, high-quality build materials, and a sleek design, the m17 R5 is a top contender for any serious gamer looking to enhance their portable gaming experience. In this review, we will delve deep into what makes this gaming laptop stand out from its competition.

Design and Build Quality

The Alienware m17 R5 inherits the iconic futuristic Alienware design language with customizable RGB lighting on the logo, keyboard, and touchpad. The laptop features a magnesium alloy construction, giving it durability and strength while maintaining a relatively light weight at 6.55 lbs (2.97 kg). The slim profile of just 0.87 inches (2.2 cm) makes it one of the more compact gaming laptops in this performance range.

Display

The m17 R5 is equipped with an impressive 17.3-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) display with a fast refresh rate of 360Hz and support for NVIDIA G-Sync technology. This combination ensures smooth gameplay even in fast-paced action scenes with minimal screen tearing and stuttering. Furthermore, color accuracy is excellent thanks to 100% sRGB coverage, making it suitable for both gaming and content creation tasks.

Performance and Hardware

Under the hood, the Alienware m17 R5 packs in quite a punch with Intel’s latest 11th generation Core i9-11900H processor and NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3080 GPU with 16GB GDDR6 memory. These components work hand in hand to deliver outstanding performance that can handle demanding games at high settings without breaking a sweat.

To support this powerful hardware, Alienware has implemented its exclusive Cryo-tech cooling system, which utilizes strategically placed vents and copper heat pipes to maintain optimal temperatures during intensive gaming sessions.

Memory and Storage

The m17 R5 allows for memory configurations of up to 32GB DDR4 RAM at 3200MHz, providing plenty of multitasking capabilities. As for storage, it features user-upgradable dual M.2 SSD slots that can support up to 4TB in total, ensuring ample space for all your games and applications.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The laptop comes with the Alienware-exclusive mSeries keyboard featuring per-key customizable RGB lighting and an anti-ghosting n-key rollover. The keys offer a comfortable 1.7mm travel distance, making for a tactile and responsive typing experience. The spacious glass touchpad features the Microsoft Precision drivers, providing accurate tracking and smooth multitouch gestures.

Battery Life

While gaming laptops typically aren’t known for stellar battery life, the m17 R5 makes a decent effort with a 6-cell 86 Wh lithium-ion battery. Under mixed usage with moderate brightness, you can expect around 3-4 hours of runtime before needing to plug in.

Conclusion

The Alienware m17 R5 successfully delivers top-tier performance in a sleek and sturdy package that is sure to impress both gamers and content creators alike. With its stunning display, powerful hardware, and customizable design elements, the m17 R5 has certainly earned its place among the finest gaming laptops available today.
