Introduction

Welcome to Ankara, the capital city of Turkey! Often overshadowed by Istanbul, Ankara offers a unique glimpse into modern Turkey, blending contemporary urban life with rich historical heritage. As the seat of government, it’s a city of diplomats, students, and civil servants, offering a different perspective on Turkish culture.

What to See and Do

  1. Anıtkabir: Visit the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey.
  2. Museum of Anatolian Civilizations: Explore artifacts from various Anatolian civilizations.
  3. Kocatepe Mosque: Admire the largest mosque in the city, an impressive example of modern Islamic architecture.
  4. Atakule: Get panoramic views of the city from this iconic tower.
  5. Old Town (Ulus): Wander through the historic heart of Ankara.

Where to Eat

  • Hacı Arif Bey: Try traditional Turkish kebabs and mezes.
  • Divan Çengelhan Brasserie: Enjoy upscale Turkish cuisine in a historic setting.
  • Zenger PaşaKonağı: Experience Ottoman-style dining in a restored mansion.

Getting Around

Ankara has an efficient metro system and bus network. Taxis are also readily available for convenient transportation.

Conclusion

While Ankara may not have the instant allure of Istanbul, it offers a deeper understanding of Turkey’s political and cultural landscape. From ancient civilizations to modern statehood, Ankara tells the story of a nation in transition, making it a fascinating destination for those seeking to understand contemporary Turkey.
