What Is Steam Proton and How Does It Run Windows Games on Steam Deck?

Steam Proton is a compatibility layer that allows users to run Windows games on Linux systems. It uses Wine, an open-source software that can run Windows programs on Linux, as well as other tools to make the experience more seamless.

The Steam Deck is the latest handheld gaming device from Valve, the company behind Steam Proton. It is a portable console that can run Windows games, thanks to Steam Proton.

The key to Steam Proton’s success is its ability to translate Windows API calls into Linux equivalents. This allows Windows programs, including games, to run on Linux as if they were native applications. While not every Windows game is supported on Steam Proton, the vast majority are, and the compatibility list continues to grow.

Steam Proton also includes a tool called DXVK, which translates DirectX 9, 10, and 11 calls into Vulkan, a cross-platform graphics API that is faster and more efficient. This makes games run smoother on Linux, even on lesser hardware.

Using Steam Proton on the Steam Deck is as easy as installing a game from the Steam library. The device runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system that includes Steam Proton, so users do not need to do any additional installation or setup.

Valve has also made efforts to optimize Steam Proton for the Steam Deck, with features such as automatic resolution scaling and custom graphics drivers. The company has stated that it aims to provide a seamless and hassle-free gaming experience on Linux, and Steam Proton is a big part of that effort.

Overall, Steam Proton is an impressive technology that allows Linux users to enjoy a wide variety of Windows games without having to switch operating systems. With the emergence of the Steam Deck, it is poised to become an even more important tool for gamers who want to take their favorite titles on the go.
