As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, knowing multiple languages can enhance your personal and professional life. However, taking a traditional language course can be costly and time-consuming. Fortunately, there are plenty of free language learning websites available to help you achieve fluency in a new language. Here are some of the best free language learning websites of 2023.

  1. Duolingo

Duolingo is one of the most popular language learning websites, and for good reason. The platform is gamified, making language learning fun and engaging. You can choose from over 30 languages and learn through a mixture of listening, reading, speaking, and writing exercises. Duolingo’s free plan is comprehensive and includes pronunciation training, exercises that teach you how to conjugate verbs, and vocabulary building. The platform also offers a premium version that gives you access to more features and allows you to learn offline.

  1. Memrise

Memrise is another gamified language learning website that offers a variety of courses to learn over 20 languages. The platform focuses on building your vocabulary through interactive flashcards and real-life usage. Memrise’s free plan allows you to learn plenty of vocabulary through their carefully curated flashcard decks. You can opt for their premium plan, which includes learning courses that teach you grammar, reading, writing, and more.

  1. Babbel

Babbel is a language learning website that offers courses in 14 different languages. The platform focuses on providing practical language knowledge that you can apply in real life. The courses are organized according to different topics, such as food and drink, travel, and work, making it easy to start learning about the things you’re most interested in. The free plan gives you access to some lessons while the premium version provides you with full access to all their courses, features and personalized learning tools.

  1. Busuu

Busuu offers courses in 12 different languages and provides a variety of language learning resources such as audio-visual materials, speaking practice, grammar lessons, and quizzes. One of the interesting features of Busuu is their community aspect which allows you to connect with native speakers and other learners to practice speaking, share tips and get feedback on your skills. The free plan of the platform’s app offers plenty of language content to start learning while their premium plan provides additional features such as grammar reviews and adaptive grammar lessons.

  1. Lingoda

Lingoda offers courses in German, Spanish, English, and French languages through private and small group online sessions. Despite most of its courses are paid, there is a chance to qualify for free language classes during their Language Sprint challenges that require you to study intensively for a certain time period to earn points.

Learning a new language can be a challenging yet rewarding journey, and with many free language learning websites available online, it has never been easier to start. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced language learner, the platforms listed above will provide you effective and engaging resources to reach fluency in the language of your choice.
