Introduction

Bose, a name synonymous with premium audio experiences, has launched the SoundLink Flex 2 in January 2025, aiming to redefine expectations in the portable Bluetooth speaker market. Building on the success of the original SoundLink Flex, this new iteration promises enhanced sound quality, improved durability, and a host of new features designed to cater to the evolving needs of audio enthusiasts. In this review, we’ll explore how the SoundLink Flex 2 performs and whether it lives up to Bose’s reputation for audio excellence.

Design and Build Quality

The SoundLink Flex 2 retains the sleek, minimalist design of its predecessor, with some subtle refinements. Measuring 7.9 x 2.1 x 3.6 inches and weighing just over a pound, it strikes a perfect balance between portability and sound capability. The speaker is available in four sophisticated colors: Triple Black, White Smoke, Stone Blue, and a new Terracotta Red.

Bose has further improved the already impressive durability of the SoundLink Flex. The Flex 2 boasts an IP68 rating, making it not only fully dustproof but also able to withstand submersion in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. The soft-touch silicone exterior feels premium and provides excellent grip, while also resisting scratches and fingerprints.

A notable design improvement is the addition of a small OLED display on the top of the speaker. This discreetly shows battery life, connection status, and current sound mode, adding functionality without compromising the clean aesthetic.

Sound Quality

Sound quality has always been Bose’s forte, and the SoundLink Flex 2 takes it to new heights. Bose has introduced their new PositionIQ 2.0 technology, an advancement of the original PositionIQ. This feature uses internal gyroscopes and accelerometers to detect the speaker’s orientation and adjust the sound accordingly, ensuring optimal audio performance whether the speaker is standing up, lying flat, or hanging from its integrated loop.

The audio profile of the SoundLink Flex 2 is nothing short of impressive. It delivers a rich, full-bodied sound that belies its compact size. The bass response is deep and punchy, providing a solid foundation for any genre of music. Mids are clear and well-defined, ensuring vocals and instruments come through with excellent clarity. The high frequencies are crisp and detailed, adding sparkle to the overall sound without ever becoming harsh.

One of the standout features is the new Adaptive EQ system. Using built-in microphones, the Flex 2 analyzes its surroundings and adjusts the sound profile in real-time. This works remarkably well, providing consistent, high-quality audio whether you’re in a small room, a large open space, or outdoors.

The maximum volume has been increased by about 20% compared to the original Flex, allowing the speaker to fill larger spaces with ease. Even at top volumes, distortion is minimal, a testament to Bose’s acoustic engineering prowess.

Battery Life and Connectivity

Bose has made significant improvements in battery performance with the SoundLink Flex 2. It now boasts up to 14 hours of playtime, a 2-hour increase from its predecessor. In our tests, we consistently achieved between 12-13 hours at moderate volume levels. The speaker charges via USB-C, with fast charging support providing 3 hours of playtime from just 15 minutes of charging.

Connectivity has been upgraded to Bluetooth 5.3, ensuring a stable connection and support for the latest audio codecs, including aptX Adaptive and LDAC. This allows for higher quality wireless audio transmission and lower latency. The Bluetooth range has been extended to about 60 feet, performing exceptionally well even with obstacles in between.

Additional Features

The Bose Connect app has been revamped for the SoundLink Flex 2, offering more customization options and features. Users can access a fully parametric EQ, adjust the PositionIQ 2.0 and Adaptive EQ settings, and even customize the information displayed on the OLED screen. The app also allows for easy firmware updates and battery monitoring.

Bose’s SimpleSync technology has been improved, allowing you to pair the SoundLink Flex 2 with other Bose smart speakers and soundbars for a multi-room audio experience. You can now connect up to 8 compatible Bose speakers for synchronized playback.

New to the SoundLink Flex 2 is built-in voice assistant support for both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. A dedicated button on the speaker activates your preferred assistant, turning the Flex 2 into a portable smart speaker. The far-field microphones perform admirably, picking up voice commands accurately even in noisy environments.

Conclusion

The Bose SoundLink Flex 2 represents a significant evolution in the portable Bluetooth speaker market. It successfully builds upon the strengths of its predecessor while introducing meaningful improvements and innovative features. The combination of exceptional sound quality, robust build, and smart features makes it a standout option in the premium portable speaker segment.

Priced at $169.99, the SoundLink Flex 2 sits at the higher end of the portable Bluetooth speaker market. However, its performance, durability, and feature set justify the price tag, offering value that rivals or exceeds many more expensive options. The improved battery life, adaptive sound features, and voice assistant integration make it a versatile companion for a wide range of uses, from indoor listening to outdoor adventures.

For those seeking a portable Bluetooth speaker that delivers uncompromising sound quality, rugged durability, and cutting-edge features, the Bose SoundLink Flex 2 is an excellent choice. It’s not just an incremental update but a reimagining of what a portable speaker can be. Whether you’re a long-time Bose enthusiast or new to the brand, the SoundLink Flex 2 is sure to impress, solidifying its position as one of the best portable speakers of 2025.
