Introduction:
On November 18, 2024, a Rockford man was sentenced to more than eleven years in federal prison for his involvement in two armed robberies. The sentencing marks a significant step in addressing violent crime in the Rockford area and serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of such actions.

Main Story:
Thomas L. Hawkins, a 38-year-old resident of Rockford, pleaded guilty earlier this year to participating in two armed robberies that took place in 2020. The first robbery occurred on September 26, 2020, at a Red Roof Inn in Rockford. Hawkins, armed with a dangerous weapon resembling a firearm, and a co-conspirator forced an employee to a rear counter and stole approximately $1,600 before fleeing the scene.

The second robbery took place on October 20, 2020, at a Mobil gas station in Rockford. Hawkins, again armed with a firearm, and his co-conspirator pushed an employee to a rear area of the store and stole approximately $1,100 before escaping. The Rockford Police Department, in collaboration with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), conducted a thorough investigation that led to Hawkins’ arrest and subsequent guilty plea.

On Friday, November 15, 2024, U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston sentenced Hawkins to eleven years and three months in federal prison. The sentence was announced by Morris Pasqual, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Christopher Amon, Special Agent-in-Charge of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Chicago Field Office.

Conclusion:
The sentencing of Thomas L. Hawkins to over eleven years in federal prison for his involvement in two armed robberies in Rockford serves as a stern warning to those who engage in violent crime. The collaborative efforts of local and federal law enforcement agencies in bringing Hawkins to justice demonstrate the commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the Rockford community. As the community moves forward, it is essential to continue supporting law enforcement efforts to prevent and address criminal activities.
