9 Habits of The Best Conversationalists

The art of conversation is a skill honed through practice and attention. It’s about more than just talking; it’s about connecting, understanding, and making others feel valued. Here are 9 habits that set the best conversationalists apart:

1. Active Listening: Truly listen to what others have to say, paying attention to both verbal and non-verbal cues. Ask follow-up questions and show genuine interest.

2. Asking Open-Ended Questions: Avoid yes/no questions that stifle conversation. Instead, ask questions that encourage elaboration and exploration of topics.

3. Sharing Relevant Anecdotes: Weaving in personal stories and experiences can make conversations more engaging and memorable.

4. Respecting Differences: Recognize that everyone has their own perspectives and opinions. Be open-minded, respectful, and avoid judgment.

5. Showing Empathy: Try to understand the other person’s point of view, even if you don’t agree. Empathy builds trust and creates a comfortable space for dialogue.

6. Using Humor Sparingly: A well-placed joke can lighten the mood, but be mindful of your audience and avoid overly sarcastic or offensive humor.

7. Being Present: Put away distractions like phones and focus your attention on the conversation at hand. Your undivided presence shows respect and engagement.

8. Adapting to Different People: Adjust your communication style to suit the individual you’re talking to. What works with one person might not work with another.

9. Recognizing Conversation Flow: Be sensitive to the ebb and flow of the conversation. Don’t dominate, but also don’t be afraid to steer the conversation in a new direction if it feels stagnant.

Mastering these habits will transform you from a passive listener to an engaging conversationalist, building stronger connections and fostering richer interactions. Remember, the best conversations are a two-way street.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
