8 ways to deal with chronic complainers

Chronic complainers can drain your energy and dampen your mood. They find fault in everything and everyone, making it difficult to have a positive interaction. While you can’t control their behavior, you can learn to navigate these relationships effectively.

Here are 8 strategies to deal with chronic complainers:

1. Acknowledge and Validate: Start by acknowledging their feelings without agreeing with their complaint. Say something like, “I hear you’re frustrated about this.” This shows empathy and validates their experience.

2. Limit Exposure: If the complaining is excessive, it’s okay to limit your exposure. This doesn’t mean cutting them off entirely, but it might mean saying, “I’m happy to talk about this another time,” or suggesting a different activity.

3. Redirect the Conversation: Instead of getting caught in the negativity, gently shift the focus. Ask about solutions, or propose alternative perspectives. “What could you do differently next time?” or “Maybe there’s a more positive way to look at this.”

4. Set Boundaries: Clearly communicate your limits. If their complaining is affecting your well-being, let them know. “I’m not comfortable with you constantly complaining about [topic].”

5. Focus on Solutions: Don’t engage in endless negativity. Encourage them to focus on solutions rather than dwelling on problems. “Let’s brainstorm ways to address this.”

6. Don’t Take it Personally: Remember, their negativity is often a reflection of their own struggles. Try not to internalize their complaints and see it as a personal attack.

7. Offer Support: If you’re close to the person, offer genuine support and encourage them to seek professional help if their negativity stems from a deeper issue.

8. Practice Self-Care: It’s crucial to protect your own well-being. Spend time with positive people, engage in activities that uplift you, and prioritize your mental health.

Dealing with chronic complainers requires patience, understanding, and boundaries. By using these strategies, you can navigate these relationships while maintaining your own sanity and positivity.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
